Chapter 6 - The Federal AuditThe heavy front double doors of the Queen Anne estate were blown inward with a deafening CRACK as federal tactical officers from the FBI and IRS Criminal Investigation Division flooded into the grand residence.

"FEDERAL AGENTS! DON'T MOVE!" high-powered megaphones boomed through the hallways.

Inside the dining room, Richard, Nathan, and Victor stood paralyzed as twelve heavily armed federal agents surrounded the mahogany table, their weapons raised, high-intensity flashlights painting red laser dots across Richard's silk suit.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Richard shrieked, his aristocratic composure completely shattering into pathetic, unhinged panic. "I am Richard Hayes! I am a senior urban development consultant! You have no right to enter my private home!"

Marcus Sterling stepped through the shattered front doors, wearing a tactical jacket, holding a federal search warrant and three arrest warrants stamped by the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington.

"Richard Hayes," Marcus announced cleanly, his voice echoing off the grand marble walls. "You, your wife Margaret, and your associates are under arrest for federal wire fraud, corporate conspiracy, illegal narcotics distribution, and attempted murder."

Down in the basement, two federal agents charged down the wooden stairs, their weapons drawn, pinning Ethan against the concrete wall as he screamed and struggled, slapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

"GET OFF ME!" Ethan shrieked, his face pressed flat against the damp concrete. "THIS IS A MISTAKE! MY WIFE IS MENTALLY UNSTABLE!"

I stepped out from behind the electrical panel, walking smoothly past Ethan, holding my burner phone and the iron wrench.

Marcus stepped down the basement stairs, looking at me with deep, quiet respect.

"Are you alright, Lauren?" Marcus asked gently.

"I am perfectly fine, Marcus," I replied, handing him the burner phone containing the sixty-two high-resolution ledger images and the 4K video recording. "The complete evidence package is uploaded to your server. The ninety-million-dollar waterfront transfer has been permanently blocked."

Ethan raised his head from the concrete floor, his bloodshot eyes locking onto my face with a look of pure, horror-stricken realization as he realized that every single detail of his four-month plot had been thoroughly, surgically dismantled by the quiet auditor he had dismissed as a victim.

"Lauren... please!" Ethan wept, his voice cracking into pathetic, desperate squeaks as the federal agents pulled him to his feet. "Lauren, look at me! I'm your husband! We can fix this! I was forced into this by my father!"

I stopped on the basement stairs, looking down at the man I had married three years ago.

"You gave me fifteen minutes of lies every Sunday, Ethan," I whispered softly, my voice cold, clear, and absolute. "I'm giving you twenty years in federal prison."
