Chapter 6 - THE RECONSTRUCTIONSix months later.

The autumn leaves were turning golden red along Lake Shore Drive.

Inside the headquarters of Carter Enterprises, the atmosphere was bustling with new energy. The company had been completely rebranded as Eleanor Carter Global Logistics, honorably named after my late mother.

We had recovered one hundred percent of the stolen funds through court-ordered asset liquidations. Ryan Bennett was currently serving a seven-year sentence in a federal facility for financial fraud, while Madison had been sentenced to three years of probation and mandatory community service after agreeing to plead guilty.

My father had quietly retired to Florida, unable to face the Chicago social scene after the scandal.

I sat in my penthouse office, finalizing a forty-million-dollar expansion deal with a group of international logistics partners from Europe.

A soft knock sounded on my door.

Dominic walked in, wearing a dark navy suit without a tie, carrying a small, dark velvet box in his hand.

"Are you busy, Chief Executive?" Dominic asked, a warm smile gracing his features.

"Never too busy for you," I replied, standing up from my desk, walking over to meet him near the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the lake.

Over the past six months, Dominic hadn't just been my business advisor; he had become my rock, my confidant, and the man who taught me how to believe in myself again.

"I brought you something," Dominic said, holding out the small velvet box.

My heart fluttered. "Dominic... what is this?"

"Open it," he murmured.

I opened the box. Inside was a delicate, vintage platinum brooch shaped like a sunflower, encrusted with yellow diamonds.

"This belonged to your mother," Dominic revealed softly. "She sold it twenty years ago to buy her first computer server for the company. I tracked it down at an auction house in London last week."

Tears pricked the corners of my eyes as I looked at the shimmering brooch. I looked up at Dominic, feeling a deep, unshakeable warmth spilling through my chest.

"You’ve spent six months protecting me, Dominic," I whispered, reaching up to gently touch the thin scar above his eyebrow. "When are you going to let me take care of you?"

Dominic captured my hand, pressing his lips gently against my palm.

"Eight months ago, at the Sterling Hotel," Dominic murmured, his grey eyes burning with deep, devotion, "you asked a complete stranger to kiss you."

"I remember," I smiled softly.

"I told you I hadn't said no," he whispered, leaning down, his face inches from mine. "I was just waiting for the right moment."
