Chapter 2 - The Wrath of Alexander VanceThe three slow knocks echoed through the silent house like hammer blows against a coffin.

Inside the bathroom, I held my breath, pressing my back harder against the cold tiles. My ribs throbbed with every shallow inhalation, but the physical pain was completely overshadowed by a terrifying, electric suspense.

Who was at the door? And more importantly, how had they arrived so fast?

In the hallway, Derek froze. I heard him pivot away from the bathroom door, his breathing ragged and fast. For months, Derek had ruled our home like a small-time tyrant, believing his charm, his family connections, and his subtle manipulation made him untouchable. But the heavy, unyielding silence outside told a different story.

"Who is it?" Derek shouted toward the front entrance, his voice cracking slightly on the last syllable.

There was no answer from the foyer. Just a heavy, menacing quiet.

Then came the sound of splintering wood.

It wasn't a tentative knock this time. The front door—a solid-core mahogany door fitted with a heavy deadbolt—burst inward with a deafening crash, the reinforced frame snapping as if it were made of matchsticks.

I gasped, my hands flying to my mouth.

"What the hell—!" Derek yelled, sounding genuinely unhinged now. "You're trespassing! I'm calling the police right—"

A dull, wet thud echoed down the hall, followed by the sound of something heavy hitting the hardwood floor and sliding a few feet. Then silence returned, absolute and chilling.

I squeezed my eyes shut, tears leaking from the corners. Had Derek just been attacked? Had I just summoned a violent criminal into my home?

Footsteps approached the master bathroom. They weren't hurried. They were slow, steady, and deliberate—the footsteps of a man who owned the very ground he walked upon.

Click.

The bathroom door didn't just rattle this time. A heavy metallic snap echoed through the lock as a crowbar or industrial tool was jammed into the latch. With a single, effortless heave, the door burst open, smashing against the interior wall with a crack that made me scream.

I curled into a ball, shielding my head with my arms.

"Claire?"

The voice was deep, gravelly, and entirely devoid of warmth, yet it carried an undertone of fierce, controlled intensity that stopped my tears instantly.

I slowly lowered my arms and looked up.

Standing in the shattered doorway was a man who looked like he had stepped straight out of a high-stakes corporate thriller. He wore a tailored charcoal-gray suit without a wrinkle, though his silk tie was slightly loosened at the collar. His dark hair was combed back with sharp precision, and his jawline looked like it had been chiseled from granite.

But it was his eyes that immobilized me—a piercing, pale slate-gray that scanned the small bathroom in a fraction of a second, absorbing every detail: my pale face, my bruised arm, the dried blood on my lip, and the way I clutched my side.

This wasn't an ordinary stranger. This was Alexander Vance.

Even in suburban towns outside the city, everyone knew that name. Alexander Vance was the reclusive billionaire behind Vance International—a sprawling conglomerate of shipping, tech infrastructure, and private security that dominated the Eastern Seaboard. He was a man politicians avoided crossing and financial rivals feared mentioning by name.

And yet, here he was, standing in my cramped, blood-stained bathroom.

"Can you stand?" Alexander asked, his voice low and commanding, brooking no argument.

I swallowed hard, my throat dry as sandpaper. "My... my ribs. I think they're cracked."

Without waiting for permission, Alexander stepped over the splintered remains of the door. He knelt down beside me with surprising grace, his large, warm hands hovering just millimeters from my bruised body, assessing how to lift me without causing further injury.

"Don't move too fast," he instructed, his tone softening by a fraction. "I've got you."

He slid one arm carefully beneath my knees and the other securely supporting my back, lifting me effortlessly off the cold floor. I hissed in pain, my hands instinctively grabbing the lapels of his expensive suit jacket for support, burying my face against his shoulder as a wave of dizziness washed over me.

As he carried me out of the bathroom, I caught a glimpse of the hallway.

Derek was sprawled unconscious near the entrance of the master bedroom, a nasty bruise swelling across his jaw. Two massive men in tactical suits stood guard near the ruined front entrance, their faces impassive as they monitored encrypted earpieces.

"Where... where are we going?" I whispered against Alexander's collarbone as we stepped out through the shattered front door into the cool night air.

"Away from here," Alexander replied, his voice vibrating through his chest as he carried me toward a sleek, black armored SUV waiting in the driveway with its engine idling. "And into a place where that bastard will never, ever touch you again."
