Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Hidden ForeclosureBy 2:00 PM that afternoon, the sunlit dining room of the Bennett Country Inn was transformed into an emergency tactical command post.

Outside, six dark SUVs from Vance Tactical Security guarded the perimeter, while four armed operators in suits patrolled the sunflower fields. Inside, my cousin Tess and my grandmother sat on the floral sofa, sipping tea in stunned silence, while Senior Corporate Prosecutor Bridget Colton opened three heavy, red-sealed leather binders flat onto the oak dining table.

I sat in a wooden chair, still wearing the diamond ring, staring down at digital displays showing financial transfers that made my jaw drop.

"Daisy, Don Moretti," Bridget Colton spoke crisp and fast, her sharp blue eyes holding surgical professional fury. "The forensic audit into the foreclosure notices served on the Bennett Inn is complete."

Vincent stood behind my chair, his broad hands resting lightly on my shoulders. The weight of his touch was solid, protective, and strangely grounding.

"Explain it to my fiancée, Bridget," Vincent commanded flatly.

Bridget tapped the digital displays:

THE FRAUDULENT LAND GRAB: Proof that local rival developer Victor Sterling (an associate of a corrupt Chicago syndicate) systematically falsified property tax liens against the inn to force a sheriff's auction.

THE THREE-MILLION-DOLLAR EMBEZZLEMENT: Intercepted bank transfers showing Victor Sterling tried to seize the Bennett property to build an illegal casino front along the state border.

THE SOVEREIGN DEED: Certified county records confirming Daisy Bennett as sole legal owner of eighty acres of prime commercial land, now backed by the full financial weight of the Moretti Maritime Trust.

My hands tightened around my tea cup. "Victor Sterling... he told my grandmother last week that if we didn't sign the deed over by Friday, he'd have the county tear down the barn!"

Vincent’s dark gray eyes narrowed into razor-sharp slits of cold, lethal fury. His hands gently squeezed my shoulders.

"He isn't tearing down anything, Daisy," Vincent promised, his deep baritone carrying an iron oath that shook the quiet room. "Tomorrow morning at the Chicago Financial Summit... we show Victor Sterling what happens when you threaten my wife's home."
