Chapter 4 - The CFO’s BetrayalRichard Vance didn't look like a terrified corporate embezzler caught in the act. He looked calm, predatory, and entirely unbothered by the federal weapon pointed directly at Julian’s chest. His silver hair was neatly combed, his bespoke suit unwrinkled despite the late hour.

“Julian, Julian, Julian,” Richard sighed, shaking his head with mock disappointment as he stepped further into the office. “You were supposed to stay home, drink your bourbon, and let the federal indictment crush you quietly. Why do successful men always insist on ruining their own funerals?”
Julian kept his hands visible, his muscles coiled like springs. “You’ve been siphoning millions through Apex Maritime for two years, Richard. You framed me, you ruined my company, and you worked with Sarah to drain my personal accounts.”
“Business is business, my old friend,” Richard said smoothly, his eyes briefly flickering down to Laura, who remained kneeling by the open safe with the encrypted drive clutched in her hand. Then, Richard’s expression froze. A sudden, cold recognition flashed across his face as he stared at her profile. “Wait a minute... I know those eyes. You’re David Hayes’s widow.”
Laura slowly stood up, slipping the encrypted drive securely into her coat pocket. When she turned to face Richard, her expression was devoid of fear—cold, hard, and burning with a lethal intensity.
“You remember David,” Laura said, her voice dangerously quiet. “Good. Because he spent the last week of his life trying to stop you from stealing millions from municipal infrastructure funds through the exact same shell corporations you’re using now.”
Richard’s lips tightened into a thin, ugly line. He shifted the grip on his firearm slightly, leveling it toward Laura. “David was a stubborn fool who didn't know when to mind his own business. Just like his wife seems to be.”
“Put the gun down, Richard,” Julian snapped, taking a deliberate step forward to place himself between the CFO and Laura. “You can’t shoot your way out of this. The data on that drive is already backing up to an off-site cloud server. Even if you pull that trigger, the District Attorney will have your entire operation by sunrise.”
Richard let out a sharp, humorless bark of laughter. “You really think I’m working alone, Julian? Apex Maritime isn't just a shell company. It’s the primary financial engine for a syndicate that stretches from Chicago to New York. You think a federal indictment scares men like that? They own half the municipal judges in this state.”
“And the other half are about to get a very interesting package from the U.S. Attorney’s office,” a cold, booming voice echoed from the hallway outside.
Richard’s head whipped toward the open doorway.
Before the CFO could react, two flash-bang stun grenades sailed through the doorway, hitting the carpet with a sharp clatter.
FLASH! BANG!
A blinding white light filled the office accompanied by a deafening concussive roar that rattled the windows. Richard stumbled backward, blinded and disoriented, dropping his Glock as he clutched his ears with a cry of pain.
Before he could recover, three heavily armed federal agents in tactical gear swarmed into the office, pinning Richard face-down to the mahogany floor and slapping steel cuffs onto his wrists.
Stepping calmly through the smoke behind the tactical team came a tall, broad-shouldered man in a tailored charcoal suit, his dark hair silvering at the temples, carrying an expression of absolute, terrifying authority.
Julian stared in astonishment. “Roman... what the hell are you doing in Chicago?”
Roman Caruso walked into the office, his grey eyes sweeping over the scene before resting on Laura, who stood tall beside the open safe. He slipped his hands casually into his pockets.
“Your corporate operations in Chicago intersect with my shipping lanes in New York, Julian,” Roman said smoothly, a faint, dangerous smile touching his lips. “When my wife, Evelyn, intercepted a data leak connecting Apex Maritime to a syndicate trying to muscle in on our eastern ports, she asked me to fly out and make sure our midwestern partners didn't get themselves killed by amateur criminals.”

Julian blinked, processing the arrival of the legendary New York syndicate boss inside his own office. “Your wife... Evelyn Mercer?”
“The very same,” Roman replied, nodding toward Laura. “And based on the encrypted drive in Mrs. Hayes’s pocket, I’d say our investment of time has already paid off.”
