Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Lost HeiressesBy 1:00 AM, the top-floor executive suite at The Mercer Hotel in SoHo was operating under an impenetrable, non-negotiable tactical lockdown.

Outside the private elevator banks, eight elite tactical operators from Vance Security—hired directly by my trusted operational brother, Lieutenant Colonel Marcus Vance—guarded every entrance and stairwell. Inside, six-year-old Mason, Henry, Theo, and Wyatt were fast asleep in a grand king-sized bed, wrapped in soft cashmere blankets, holding plush stuffed bears Marcus had ordered for them.
In the adjoining executive lounge, Lauren sat in a high-backed velvet armchair, wearing a clean silk robe provided by the hotel staff, drinking a hot cup of chamomile tea while a private pediatric specialist verified that the boys were healthy and uninjured.
Across the broad black granite table sat me, alongside Senior Corporate Prosecutor Bridget Colton and two federal forensic accounting experts.
Bridget Colton opened three heavy, red-sealed leather binders, sliding digital ledgers and legal files flat onto the table toward me and Lauren:
"Carter, Lauren," Bridget spoke, her sharp blue eyes holding profound, surgical professional fury. "The forensic audit into Eleanor and Walter Ashford’s private accounts and the 2020 legal filings is complete."
"Tell us, Bridget," I commanded flatly, my gray eyes locked onto the ledgers, my broad hands resting flat on the granite counter.
Bridget tapped the digital files:
THE FORGED PAYOUT LETTER: Forensic digital analysis proving Eleanor Ashford forged Lauren’s signature on the 2020 severance agreement, using a proxy key held by her private attorney, Richard Sterling-Smith.
THE EMBEZZLED DESIGN TRUST: Proof that Lauren’s late father had willed her a $160 million commercial real estate trust (The Ferris Heritage Trust), which Walter Ashford illegally suppressed and absorbed into Ashford Global using forged probate decrees.
THE SYNDICATE EMBEZZLEMENT: Bank registries documenting Walter Ashford and Blair Whitmore’s father transferring $75 million in corporate funds into offshore Panamanian shell accounts to finance the Whitmore merger.
My fists clenched flat against the granite table until the leather of my watch strap creaked.
"They didn't just try to break us apart," I whispered, every word carrying an icy, terrifying weight. "My mother and uncle stole Lauren’s father's legacy, threatened my unborn sons, and spent six years trying to starve my family in Oregon so they wouldn't claim their fifty-one percent controlling equity in the maritime berths."
"Yes, Carter," Bridget Colton confirmed flatly. "Under state and federal maritime law, because Lauren holds the original Ferris Trust Deeds, she and the quadruplets are the sole fifty-one percent controlling equity holders over the entire North Atlantic Shipping Network."
Lauren looked up from her chair, her hands trembling violently as she held her tea cup.
"They ruined my father's memory, Carter," Lauren whispered, tears spilling down her cheeks. "They made me raise my four beautiful boys in small rented apartments... they told me you were marrying Blair because I was just a temporary mistake."

I walked across the room, dropping flat onto one knee in front of Lauren’s chair. I reached out, my broad, calloused hands gently closing over her small, trembling fingers, my dark eyes fixed on hers with an unshakeable, diamond-hard devotion.
"Lauren," I swore, my voice an iron oath that shook the very room. "They took six years of our lives. Today... we take their money, their reputation, and their empire."
