Chapter 4 - The Chessboard Shifts

The name hung in the air of the executive boardroom like a live grenade with the pin pulled.

Daniel felt the blood drain entirely from his face. His carefully constructed facade of arrogant calm fractured down the middle, leaving behind a raw, naked panic. For a fraction of a second, his mind raced wildly: How? How did he know about Lily? Was she found? Did someone see me on the logging road?

"I... I don't know what you're talking about," Daniel stammered, his voice betraying a microscopic tremor that he desperately tried to swallow down. "Lily is... we broke up. She left town."

Lorenzo Moretti didn't blink. He simply tilted his head, a faint, cold smile touching the corner of his mouth.

"She left town," Moretti repeated, savoring the words like a bitter vintage wine. He slowly picked up a manila folder from the table and slid it across the polished mahogany surface toward Daniel. "Strange. My associates found her staggering down County Route 9 late last night, suffering from severe hypothermia, concussion, and internal bleeding. Coincidentally, she was discovered exactly three miles from the spot where your Mercedes SUV spent forty-two minutes idling off the main thoroughfare."

Daniel’s breath hitched. She’s alive.

The two words echoed through his brain with deafening force. She hadn't frozen. She hadn't died in the snow. Someone had found her—someone dangerous, powerful, and terrifyingly well-informed.

"Who are you?" Daniel whispered, his bravado completely evaporated, leaving behind the primal fear of a cornered predator. "What do you want with her?"

"That, Mr. Carew, is the wrong question," Moretti replied calmly, standing up from the leather chair. He adjusted his suit jacket, his presence dominating the entire room without him having to raise his voice an inch. "The question you should be asking yourself is: Why did the daughter of the man you ruined four years ago end up under my protection?"

Daniel flinched as if he’d been struck physically. Four years ago.

Memories flashed through his mind—a small-scale construction firm in Chicago, a competitor named Thomas Marsh who had refused to sell out his land rights for a municipal expansion project, and the sudden, convenient financial ruin that forced Marsh into bankruptcy, followed shortly by a fatal heart attack. Daniel had engineered the whole thing on behalf of his early syndicates. And Lily... Lily had been Marsh's daughter. Daniel had unknowingly dated her, controlled her, and abused her as some bizarre, subconscious trophy of his past corporate conquests.

"She didn't know," Daniel muttered hoarsely. "She didn't know who her father was when we met. I kept her blind."

"She didn't," Moretti agreed softly, walking slowly around the table until he was standing just two feet away from Daniel. Up close, Moretti’s eyes looked like polished steel. "Until she found your office ledger three weeks ago. Until she connected the dots between your embezzlement and her father’s murder. And until you decided to beat her unconscious and leave her to freeze in the dark like an animal."

Moretti paused, letting the heavy, suffocating silence settle over the room.

"In my world, Mr. Carew, men who raise their hands against women without consequence do not survive long. But killing you quickly would be far too merciful for the debt you owe."

Moretti reached out, casually tapping the hard leather surface of Daniel’s briefcase with his index finger.

"Effective immediately, Carter-Vance Holdings is no longer yours. Your bank accounts, your shell companies, your luxury apartments, and your supercars have already been transferred into a holding trust managed by my organization. By noon today, you are a legal nobody."

Daniel’s jaw dropped. "You can't do that! That's illegal! I'll go to the police, I'll—"

"The police?" Moretti chuckled, a dry, humorless sound. "Mr. Carew, the police in this state filed your financial records into an archive three hours ago under federal seal. As far as the law is concerned, you are currently under investigation for corporate espionage, embezzlement, racketeering, and attempted homicide."

Moretti turned toward the door, pausing with his hand on the brass handle. He didn't look back.

"Pack your things, Daniel. A car is waiting downstairs to take you to a very secluded facility in the countryside. Miss Marsh has graciously agreed to let me handle your rehabilitation. And trust me... you are going to need a great deal of rehabilitation."

The heavy mahogany door clicked shut behind Moretti, leaving Daniel standing alone in the silent boardroom with a trembling partner, a ruined empire, and the terrifying realization that the hunter had just become the hunted.
