Chapter 5 - The Hospital SanctuaryAt St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital, the VIP maternity wing had been secured by private federal security guards.

When I woke up two hours later, resting in a comfortable, sunlit private room overlooking the Chicago skyline, my father was sitting in an armchair beside the bed, holding a warm cup of coffee while reviewing medical charts.
“How’s my grandbaby?” Arthur asked softly the moment he saw my eyes flutter open.
“The doctor said the baby is resting and completely healthy,” I whispered, my voice still scratchy from the trauma. “Just bruised, but... the baby is safe.”
Arthur let out a long, ragged breath, standing up to lean over the bed and press a tender kiss to my forehead.
“Thank God,” he murmured, his eyes suspiciously bright. “When I received that notification on my private encrypted terminal—just those two words, Help me—my heart stopped, Claire. For twenty-one years, I’ve respected your wish for distance, letting you live your own life away from the corporate spotlight. But I never stopped watching over you. The second I saw who owned the IP address of the sender transmitting from that Naperville address, I mobilized every resource at my disposal.”
“I’m sorry I didn't call sooner, Dad,” I said, a tear slipping down my cheek. “I wanted to prove I could make it on my own. I didn't want them to think I needed your name to survive.”
“You don't need my name to survive, sweetheart,” Arthur said firmly, holding my hand. “You survived because you are a Sterling. But you should never, ever have had to endure monsters like the Mercers alone.”
The door to my hospital room clicked open, and Marcus Vance walked inside, carrying a thick manila folder and wearing a satisfied smile.
“Good afternoon, Dr. Sterling,” Marcus greeted respectfully, using my maiden name. “I have some updates that will likely aid your recovery.”
“Tell me,” I said, sitting up slightly against the pillows.
“The federal grand jury indictment was expedited this morning,” Marcus reported, opening the folder. “Richard, Victor, and Helen Mercer have been formally charged with interstate domestic violence, conspiracy, financial fraud, and obstruction of justice. Furthermore, Natalie is facing charges for digital voyeurism and recording illegal acts of violence.”
“Will they make bail?” I asked.
Marcus chuckled darkly. “Not a chance in hell. I personally presented the judge with documentation proving they own multiple offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands and were actively planning to flee the country if their business deals went south. They are being held at the federal detention center without bond.”
“And their assets?” Arthur asked.
May you like
“Completely liquidated,” Marcus answered smoothly. “Mercer Industries has been dissolved. Their suburban house, their luxury cars, their country club memberships, and their personal savings have all been seized by the federal government to satisfy restitution and asset forfeiture penalties. By the end of the week, the Mercer family won't even have a pot to cook in.”
A profound sense of relief washed over me. The invisible chains that had bound me to terror, fear, and control for years were finally shattered.
