Chapter 4 - Dismantling an EmpireWithin twenty minutes, our suburban house had transformed into a federal command center.

Medics carefully lifted me onto a stretcher, stabilizing my neck and administering intravenous fluids while monitoring the baby’s heartbeat, which thankfully remained strong despite the trauma. As they wheeled me out through the front door toward a waiting ambulance, I caught a glimpse of the street outside.
It was lined with black federal SUVs, unmarked tactical vans, and state police cruisers. Neighbors were peeking through their curtains in stunned disbelief as armed agents carted out boxes of financial records, computers, and documents from the Mercer family’s vehicles parked in the driveway.
Arthur walked beside my stretcher all the way to the ambulance doors.
“Go with the medical team, Claire,” he instructed gently, squeezing my hand. “I’ll meet you at St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital in twenty minutes. Marcus and the federal team are going to handle things here.”
“Dad... be careful,” I murmured, my eyelids growing heavy from exhaustion.
“Don't worry about them, sweetheart,” Arthur replied, a chilling smile touching his lips. “They just declared war on the wrong family.”
The ambulance doors closed, sealing me in a cocoon of clinical light and quiet efficiency as the vehicle smoothly pulled away from the curb.
Back inside the house, the atmosphere had turned into an absolute nightmare for the Mercers.
Marcus Vance stood in the center of the living room, holding a thick stack of federal court orders while two armed U.S. Marshals stood on either side of him.
Richard Mercer, having regained a shred of his composure, puffed out his chest and tried to project false authority.
“This is an outrage!” Richard shouted, stepping forward. “You cannot barge into my home like this! I demand to speak to the Attorney General! I know senators! I know judges!”
Marcus didn't even blink. He slowly opened his leather portfolio and pulled out a single, crisp document embossed with the golden seal of the federal district court.
“You know a lot of people, Richard,” Marcus said coldly. “Unfortunately for you, none of them have any jurisdiction over federal racketeering, wire fraud, and interstate financial conspiracy.”
Victor, who had been handcuffed and forced to sit on the living room sofa, paled instantly. “Fraud? What fraud?! My business is completely legal!”
“Your business was a shell operation propped up entirely by Sterling Enterprises subsidiary contracts that Arthur Sterling granted you out of professional courtesy six years ago,” Marcus explained, his voice dripping with disdain. “Courtesy that expired the moment you laid a hand on his daughter.”
Marcus flipped to the next page, reading the itemized list of asset freezes.
“Effective immediately, every single corporate account, personal checking account, real estate holding, and investment portfolio owned by Mercer Industries and the Mercer family is frozen under federal asset forfeiture laws. Your corporate headquarters downtown has already been locked down by federal agents, your primary shipping licenses have been revoked, and your bank lines have been set to zero.”
Natalie burst into tears, her voice shrill and hysterical. “Zero?! How are we supposed to pay our bills?! How am I supposed to buy my car?!”
“You aren't,” Marcus replied flatly. “You’re going to be fortunate if you don't face criminal accessory charges for filming and participating in domestic assault.”
He turned to the lead U.S. Marshal.

“Take them away. Processing downtown.”
As the heavy steel handcuffs clicked into place around Richard and Victor’s wrists, the illusion of their untouchable dynastic power shattered into dust. They weren't titans of industry anymore. They were criminal suspects being hauled out of their own home in disgrace, destined for a federal holding cell.
