Chapter 5 - The Reckoning of SilasThe cleanup of the Rossi empire was swift and absolute. Within seventy-two hours, every traitor had been eliminated, their assets seized, and my control over the city reinforced beyond challenge.

However, one small detail remained unfinished.

On a rainy Thursday evening, in a rundown sports bar in Jackson Heights, Queens, Silas Vance was sitting at a greasy back table, drinking cheap whiskey, counting a wad of stolen hundred-dollar bills.

He was a thick, greasy man with yellowed teeth and a violent temper, accustomed to terrorizing women and vulnerable debtors who couldn't fight back.

The front door of the bar creaked open.

Silas didn't look up until four towering men in dark tactical suits stepped into the pub, quietly turning the open sign to 'CLOSED' and locking the front door behind them. The bartender immediately raised his hands and slid into the back pantry, locking himself inside.

"Hey! What the hell is this?!" Silas demanded, standing up and reaching for a knife in his back pocket.

The crowd of guards parted.

I stepped into the bar, my leather shoes clicking against the sticky floor. Beside me walked Hunter, looking striking, powerful, and completely unbothered by the dim, grimy surroundings.

Silas froze, his jaw dropping open as he recognized her.

"Hunter?" Silas sneered, trying to mask his sudden fear with cruelty. "What the hell are you doing here? Who are these fake tough guys? You owe me money, bitch!"

Before Silas could take a single step forward, I moved with terrifying speed.

I grabbed Silas by his throat, slamming his heavy body onto the wooden bar with enough force to shatter the liquor bottles lined behind him. I pressed my gun barrel flat against his forehead, pinning him down like an insect.

"Talk to her like that again," I whispered, my voice dripping with ice, "and I will tear your tongue out through your throat."

Silas gagged, his eyes wide with pure, unadulterated terror as he looked into my eyes. He realized instantly who I was—the man whose name was whispered in fear across every borough of New York.

"Mr. Rossi... please..." Silas choked out, his hands fluttering helplessly against my grip. "I didn't know... she's my ex-girlfriend... she took my money—"

"She took nothing from you, Silas," Hunter said, stepping closer, looking down at the man who had tormented her for years. She didn't flinch. She didn't shrink back. The fear that had ruled her life was gone, replaced by the unshakeable protection of the Rossi empire. "You took my daughter, Silas. You killed Lily."

"It was an accident!" Silas whimpered, tears mixing with the sweat on his face.

"There are no accidents, Silas," I said, leaning down until my lips were inches from his ear. "Hunter is under my personal protection now. She is the mother of the Rossi heir. And you are a dead man standing."

I didn't kill him in that bar. That would have been too quick.

Instead, my men dragged Silas out into the rain, handing him over to the federal authorities alongside a mountain of evidence detailing his illegal extortion rings, human trafficking connections, and financial fraud. Silas would spend the remaining forty years of his life in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, surrounded by men who knew exactly what he had done to a pregnant woman.

As we walked back to the limousine, Hunter paused under the streetlamp, watching the police cruisers speed away into the night.

She took a long, deep breath of the cold autumn air, letting out a breath she felt like she had been holding for years.

I stepped beside her, holding an umbrella over her head.

"Is it over?" she asked softly.

"It's over, Hunter," I replied, taking her hand in mine. "You're free."
