Chapter 5 - The Corporate Counter-AttackThe peace of the little Havertown home didn't last long.

Three days after Evan reunited with Rachel and his triplets—Leo, Maya, and Toby—the digital and physical world outside began to cave in.
Evan sat at the small kitchen table, reviewing financial audit logs on his laptop while Maya napped peacefully against his chest, her tiny fingers wrapped securely around his thumb. Rachel stood by the sink, nervously wringing a dish towel as she watched the front window.
“Evan, Richard isn't going to let this go,” Rachel said, her voice tight with anxiety. “He has the board in his pocket. He controls the corporate accounts for the Pennsylvania division. If he finds out you canceled the wedding and cut him off, he’ll destroy you.”
“Let him try,” Evan said calmly, though his jaw was locked tight. “Richard thinks he owns Cole & Associates because my father trusted him with day-to-day operations. But he forgot one fundamental thing: my grandfather established the controlling voting trust in my name before he passed away.”
Before Rachel could reply, a loud, sharp knock echoed from the front door.
Evan gently passed sleeping Maya to Rachel, standing up and smoothing down his shirt. He walked into the hallway and pulled the door open.
Standing on the porch wasn't a process server or a federal marshal. It was Richard Vance.
Richard looked immaculate in a bespoke charcoal suit, his silver-rimmed glasses catching the porch light. He didn't look like a cornered criminal; he looked like a CEO making a routine business visit.
“Well, well,” Richard smiled smoothly, stepping uninvited across the threshold into the modest hallway. “Playing suburban house with the ghosts of your past, Evan? I must admit, it’s a terrible look for a man who is supposed to walk down the aisle with Noelle Stanton in three days.”
“Get out of my house, Richard,” Evan said, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper as he blocked the hallway leading to the living room.
Richard chuckled, adjusting his cuffs. “Your house? Evan, wake up. The board met this morning. With Noelle’s father pulling their multi-million-dollar development capital after you humiliated his daughter at Rittenhouse Square, and with your erratic behavior over the last seventy-two hours, the board voted unanimously to invoke the emergency incapacity clause. You’ve been temporarily suspended as CEO of Cole & Associates.”
Evan stared at him, a cold, confident smile slowly spreading across his face.
“Is that right?” Evan asked quietly.
“It is,” Richard gloated, stepping closer. “And by tomorrow morning, I’ll assume full control of the voting trust. You’re broke, Evan. You traded an empire for a runaway girlfriend and three screaming babies.”
“You always were brilliant at reading balance sheets, Richard,” Evan said, pulling his phone from his pocket and tapping the speakerphone icon. “Too bad you failed basic corporate law.”
The screen lit up, displaying an active conference call line.
A heavy, authoritative voice boomed through the speaker: “This is Judge Thomas Sterling, general legal counsel for the Cole family trust. Mr. Vance, you are currently on a recorded line with federal investigators and the board’s ethics committee.”
Richard’s confident smile instantly evaporated. The color drained from his face as he stared at the phone.
“What... what is this?” Richard stammered, taking a step backward.
“It’s checkmate, Richard,” Evan said, stepping forward. “While you were busy forging documents and blackmailing Rachel four years ago, you left a digital paper trail through the corporate servers. My legal team filed criminal indictments for extortion, wire fraud, and identity falsification this morning. Federal marshals are currently freezing your personal accounts and securing your office at headquarters.”
Richard lunged forward in a desperate, blind rage, raising his fist to strike Evan across the face.
Before his fist could even clear the air, the front door flew open behind him, and two uniformed federal officers stepped into the hallway, grabbing Richard by both arms and slamming him against the wall with professional, practiced efficiency.

“Richard Vance, you have the right to remain silent,” the lead officer barked, clicking steel handcuffs onto his wrists.
As Richard was dragged out the front door, kicking and screaming obscenities, Evan stood in the doorway, watching him go. The ghost of his past had finally been laid to rest.
