Chapter 3 - The Web of BetrayalThe silence on the phone line stretched out like a taut wire about to snap.

When Richard finally spoke, the polished, aristocratic charm was completely gone. In its place was a sharp, clinical coldness that confirmed every single word of the letter.

“You always were entirely too sentimental, Evan,” Richard said smoothly, his voice dropping all pretense of brotherhood. “And quite frankly, remarkably blind. Did you really think a girl from a bankrupt suburban family was going to fit into the Cole dynasty? I did you a favor. I cleaned up a messy distraction before it could derail your appointment to the executive board.”

Evan’s knuckles turned white around the phone. He pressed the device so hard against his ear that his fingers ached. “You threatened her family. You lied to my face for four years. You let me live in hell.”

“I let you focus on what mattered—the company, our legacy, and a woman who actually belongs in our social circle,” Richard retorted, his tone hardening. “And quite frankly, Evan, whatever happened four years ago is ancient history. You’re getting married in six days. The invitations are out, the board has approved the merger with Noelle’s father’s firm, and the wedding is front-page news in the Philadelphia Inquirer. If you go chasing after a ghost and a trio of illegitimate kids now, you won't just ruin your wedding—you’ll destroy the entire family fortune. Think about what you're doing.”

“I’m done thinking with your logic, Richard,” Evan snarled. “If you ever come within a mile of Rachel or my children again, I won't just strip you of your partnership at Cole & Associates. I will personally see to it that you spend the next twenty years in a federal penitentiary for extortion and blackmail.”

Evan slammed his thumb down on the screen, ending the call before Richard could reply.

He lowered his hand, his chest heaving. Beside him, Noelle stood frozen, her eyes wide with shock and humiliation. She had heard enough of the one-sided conversation to piece together the terrifying reality of what was happening.

“Is... is it true?” Noelle whispered, her voice trembling. “The letter... the children... your cousin?”

Evan looked down at Noelle. For the first time, he saw her not as a convenient escape or a social obligation, but as a co-conspirator in a life he had never truly chosen.

“Our wedding is off, Noelle,” Evan said, his voice absolute.

Noelle gasped, taking a step back as if she had been physically struck. “Off? Evan, are you insane?! We are getting married in six days! My family, the press, the entire city—everyone is coming! You can’t just cancel a wedding because of some ghost from your past!”

“I didn't cancel a wedding, Noelle,” Evan replied coldly, turning his back on her and stepping toward his parked car at the edge of the square. “I just stopped living a lie.”

“Evan! Evan, don't you dare walk away from me!” Noelle screamed after him, her voice cracking with despair and fury as pedestrians turned to stare.

Evan didn't look back. He opened his car door, threw himself into the driver’s seat, and fired up the engine. He had the letter. He had the truth. Now, he had to find Rachel before Richard’s security details got to her first.
