Chapter 6 - The Cleansing FireBy 4:00 PM sharp, the Bloomfield Hills estate was entirely empty of Christopher, Sabrina, and their baggage.

The moving truck they had hastily rented had lumbered down the driveway twenty minutes prior, carrying away what little remained of their shattered dignity. The media vans lingering outside had captured every humiliating detail of their departure—Christopher hiding his face behind a cardboard box, Sabrina sobbing hysterically into the back seat of a battered sedan driven by a frantic friend who had agreed to pick them up.

I stood in the center of the grand living room, holding a glass of crisp white wine while the afternoon sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Penelope sat on the ivory sofa nearby. She looked ancient, frail, and completely broken. The matriarch who had once ruled high-society Detroit with an iron fist and a condescending smile now looked like a ghost haunting the ruins of her own creation.

“Are you going to kick me out too, Stephanie?” Penelope whispered, not daring to look me in the eye.

I walked over, setting my wine glass down on the marble coffee table, and looked down at my former mother-in-law.

“No, Penelope,” I said quietly. “You can stay here until you find a suitable apartment. But your social standing in this city is finished. Your son is facing fifteen years in a federal penitentiary for corporate embezzlement, your golden family name has been dragged through the mud, and the empire you helped him build on lies has turned to dust.”

Penelope buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking with silent, bitter tears. “We created a monster... didn't we?”

“No,” I corrected gently. “You protected a weak man until he forgot how to survive on his own truth. And I enabled him by carrying a burden that was never mine to bear. But that chapter is closed permanently.”

My phone vibrated on the table.

It was a text message from Jacqueline:

“The federal prosecutor just formally accepted all Meridian financial evidence. Christopher’s asset forfeiture hearings are locked in for next month. You are legally, cleanly, and completely free, Stephanie.”

I smiled, feeling a profound, weightless peace settle deep into my chest.
