Chapter 4 - The UnravelingThe temperature in the boardroom dropped below freezing.

Christopher gripped the edges of the table so hard his knuckles turned a chalky, translucent white. He looked around the room, desperately seeking an ally, but every single board member was staring at him with undisguised disgust and alarm.
“This is a conspiracy,” Christopher whispered, his voice trembling as sweat began to bead along his hairline. “Stephanie is... she’s just trying to ruin me because I left her! She fabricated these documents!”
“Mr. Gilbert,” Jacqueline said, her tone clinical and unyielding, pulling a final sealed document from her briefcase. “Federal forgery and embezzlement are serious charges. But they pale in comparison to what’s contained in this envelope.”
She slid the document across the table. It stopped right beside Christopher’s shaking hand.
“What... what is this?” Christopher croaked, refusing to look down at it.
“That,” Jacqueline replied clearly, “is the certified forensic DNA report completed at 6:00 AM this morning by an accredited independent laboratory, operating under strict chain-of-custody protocols using biological samples collected directly from you, Ms. Sabrina Reed, and the newborn twins.”
Christopher swallowed hard, his breathing turning shallow. “DNA? Why would you... my children are my children. Sabrina gave them to me!”
“Did she?” I asked softly.
I stood up from my chair and walked slowly around the table until I was standing right beside him. I looked down into his panicked, bloodshot eyes.
“Christopher, for eight years, you blamed me for our inability to have children. You made me feel broken, worthless, and inadequate. You humiliated me in front of your family, your friends, and your colleagues because you believed your biological legacy was a golden standard.”
“What does that have to do with anything?” he shouted defensively, though his voice lacked any real conviction.
“It has everything to do with the truth,” I said, my voice cutting through the room like a razor. “Nine years ago, after your cancer treatments, your fertility specialist confirmed you were permanently and irreversibly sterile. Your mother knew. I knew. We protected your fragile ego by keeping it a secret, letting you believe the problem rested entirely with me.”
Gasps erupted around the boardroom table. Several board members leaned back in shock.
“No... that’s impossible!” Christopher stammered, shaking his head violently. “I’m a father! Sabrina gave me twins! I saw them born!”
“Sabrina gave birth to twins, yes,” I continued smoothly, resting my hand on the back of an empty chair. “But biology dictates that a sterile man cannot father children—unless, of course, those children were conceived using an outside donor. And since Sabrina spent the last nine months receiving secret late-night visits from your junior VP of real estate acquisition, Julian Vance... well, the DNA report confirms with 99.999% certainty that you share zero genetic material with those babies.”
The room went dead silent. You could have heard a pin drop on the thick wool carpet.
Christopher stared at me, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. The reality of what I had just said hit him like a physical blow. The prestigious legacy, the dynastic triumph, the arrogant boasting from the anniversary dinner—it was all an elaborate, humiliating illusion engineered by the very woman he had betrayed and the mistress he had elevated.
“Julian...” Christopher whispered, the name tasting like ash in his mouth. “Julian... that bastard...”
“Mr. Vance has already tendered his resignation and is currently cooperating with federal investigators,” Jacqueline noted calmly. “He admitted under oath that his relationship with Ms. Sabrina Reed began over a year ago, and that the twins were conceived during one of your frequent out-of-town business trips to Chicago.”
Christopher slumped back into his leather executive chair, completely broken. The invincible corporate titan had vanished in less than ten minutes, leaving behind a hollow, disgraced shell of a man.
“And now,” I said, turning back toward the lead independent trustee, “we move to vote on the immediate termination of Christopher Gilbert as Chief Executive Officer of Meridian Healthcare Systems, pending criminal indictment for corporate embezzlement and fraud.”
The lead trustee didn't even hesitate. He raised his hand instantly.

“ Aye,” he said firmly.
One by one, every single hand around the oval table went up.
