Chapter 7 - A New Dawn on Lake Michigan

Six months later, the sun rose over Chicago, painting the surface of Lake Michigan in brilliant shades of gold, rose, and amber.
The Gold Coast mansion no longer felt like a cold, intimidating fortress. The heavy drapes were pulled wide open to let the morning light flood into every room. Laughter echoed down the grand staircase as Leo chased a golden retriever puppy across the black marble foyer, his giggles ringing out like music.
I stood on the expansive private balcony off the master suite, wrapped in a cashmere robe, sipping my coffee while the morning breeze caught my hair.
Footsteps approached from behind, and strong, familiar arms wrapped securely around my waist, pulling me back against a warm, solid chest. Damon rested his chin on my shoulder, breathing in the scent of my shampoo with a contented sigh.
"You're smiling," he murmured, pressing a soft kiss to the side of my neck.
"I was just thinking about how far we've come," I replied, leaning back into his embrace.
"Four years of running," Damon admitted, his voice laced with retrospective amusement and deep remorse. "And all it took was one stubborn woman and a forgotten photograph to bring me to my knees."
"You deserved it," I teased, turning around in his arms to wrap my arms around his neck. "Next time, you'll remember to tell your wife you love her before you let her walk out into the rain."
"There won't be a next time," Damon promised, his ice-gray eyes locking onto mine with absolute, unwavering devotion. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box, clicking it open to reveal a brand-new wedding band—simpler and more elegant than the one I had traded away in Wisconsin.
"Elena Vale," he whispered, sliding the ring onto my finger. "Will you marry me again? Properly this time—with no lies, no armor, and no running away?"
I looked down at the ring, then up into the face of the man who had torn down his entire empire just to find us.
"Only if I get to keep the woodworking shop in Oakhaven as a vacation home," I smiled.
May you like
Damon laughed—a rich, genuine sound that I had never heard in the early years of our marriage—and pulled me close against his heart.
"Deal," he whispered, kissing me as the morning sun broke fully over the horizon, illuminating a future that belonged entirely to us.
