Chapter 4 - The Aftermath and the RiseWithin forty-eight hours, the financial world had completely realigned itself around the reality of Morrison Holdings.

The corporate scandal involving Richard Bennett dominated the front pages of every major financial publication. Investigative journalists uncovered the full extent of his corporate embezzlement, his fraudulent expense reports, and his lavish lifestyle funded by stolen subsidiary capital. Faced with overwhelming evidence, federal prosecutors formally indicted Richard on six counts of wire fraud, grand larceny, and securities manipulation. Bail was denied due to flight risk, and he was remanded to a holding facility downtown.
Candace Wright, realizing her corporate sugar daddy had not only lost his fortune but was facing up to fifteen years in federal prison, packed her designer bags and vanished from the city entirely, abandoning her apartment and her position at the firm within twenty-four hours of the gala.
Patricia Bennett attempted to rally the remaining old-guard board members to stage a shareholder revolt against my leadership, only to discover that my family trust held eighty-five percent of the voting stock. Within three days, Patricia was quietly bought out of her honorary advisory role and permanently escorted off the corporate premises.
And me? I stepped directly into the spotlight I had avoided for years.
On a bright Tuesday morning, I sat at the head of the massive mahogany boardroom table on the fiftieth floor of Morrison Tower. Around the table sat the newly restructured executive board—competent, brilliant individuals who had survived the purge and understood that competence and integrity were the only currencies that mattered.
Jeffrey Santos stood near the projection screen, clicking through the quarterly growth projections.
“Since the restructuring and the public audit release,” Jeffrey reported, his voice filled with professional pride, “investor confidence has rebounded by over forty percent. Our new logistics initiative in Southeast Asia is fully funded, and our stock valuation has reached an all-time high.”
I nodded, looking around the table at the faces of my team. There was no fear in their eyes—only respect, loyalty, and sharp focus.
“Make sure the compliance protocols are tightened across all regional branches,” I instructed clearly. “We don't ever want a loophole large enough for a corporate parasite to slip through.”
“Yes, Chief Executive,” Jeffrey replied, switching off the projector.
When the meeting adjourned and the board members filed out of the room, I remained seated by the window, looking out over the sprawling expanse of the city below. The sun was climbing high into the clear blue sky, casting a brilliant, warm light across the glass skyscraper.
My phone buzzed on the polished wood of the table.
I picked it up. A text message from an unknown number.
I opened it.
“Lena, please. You have to listen to me. It’s cold in here. My lawyer says the prosecution has everything. If you just call the district attorney, if you just tell them it was a misunderstanding, they’ll drop the charges. Please. We’re husband and wife. Have some mercy.”
I stared at the screen for three seconds.
May you like
Then, with a calm and deliberate movement, I blocked the number, deleted the message, and tossed the phone back onto the table.
There was no anger left. There was no bitterness. There was only the quiet, absolute peace of a chapter permanently closed.
