Chapter 3 - The Starlight BallroomThe Starlight Ballroom at the Grand Continental Hotel was a glittering palace of crystal chandeliers, champagne fountains, and tuxedo-clad elites. Three hundred of the city’s most prominent developers, politicians, and financiers milled about under the vaulted ceilings, laughing too loudly and clinking crystal flutes filled with vintage champagne.

At the center of it all stood Derrick Hayes.

He was wearing a bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo, his hair expertly styled, his smile wide and blinding as he accepted congratulations from a group of city council members. Standing right beside him, draped in a backless silver designer gown and diamond drop earrings, was Vanessa Miller.

Officially, Vanessa was introduced to guests as “Caldwell-Hayes Development’s Senior Strategic Director.” Unofficially, everyone in the inner circle knew exactly what she was to Derrick.

Sienna stood near the heavy velvet drapes at the back of the ballroom, entirely unnoticed.

She wore her emerald silk gown like armor. Her hair was pulled back into a sleek, elegant chignon, exposing the long line of her neck and a pair of diamond-and-sapphire earrings that had belonged to her grandmother. She didn't look like a betrayed wife nursing a broken heart. She looked like a queen surveying a kingdom that was already hers.

Across the room, Derrick caught sight of her.

His smile hitched for a fraction of a second. He hadn't expected her to come. When he had mentioned the gala over breakfast that morning, he had casually suggested she stay home because she “looked tired and needed rest.”

He didn't want his hardworking, unassuming wife cramping his high-society victory lap while he paraded his mistress in front of the city’s elite.

Derrick excused himself from the councilmen, whispering something to Vanessa, and threaded his way through the crowd toward Sienna. His face wore that practiced, condescending charm that used to make her heart melt.

“Sienna,” he said, stopping in front of her with a slightly forced smile. “I thought you said you weren't feeling well. What are you doing here?”

Sienna took a slow sip of her sparkling water. “I wouldn't miss my husband’s biggest night for the world, Derrick. After all... I’ve invested so much into your success.”

Derrick chuckled nervously, his eyes darting around to make sure none of his business partners were listening. “Yeah, well. Tonight is a big step for the firm. But honestly, babe, this crowd isn't really your scene. It’s all business, high-stakes networking. Maybe you should let the driver take you home.”

“Home?” Sienna raised an eyebrow. “Before you even accept your award? Oh, Derrick. I want front-row seats when they call your name.”

Before Derrick could argue further, the lights in the ballroom dimmed, and the deep, resonant voice of the master of ceremonies echoed through the sound system.

“Ladies and gentlemen! Please take your seats. It is time to present our highest honor of the evening: The Developer of the Year Award. Please welcome to the stage... Mr. Derrick Hayes!”

Thunderous applause erupted across the ballroom. Flashbulbs blinded the front rows.

Derrick straightened his bow tie, puffed out his chest, and shot one last warning look at Sienna before turning and striding up the steps to the stage like a conquering hero. Vanessa Miller beamed from the front table, clapping wildly, her eyes shining with absolute adoration.

Derrick reached the podium, shook the presenter’s hand, and leaned into the microphone.

“Thank you,” Derrick said, his voice smooth and practiced. “Thank you to the committee, to my incredible team at Caldwell-Hayes, and above all... to my wonderful colleagues who push me to be better every single day.”

He paused, glancing down specifically at Vanessa.

“Especially Vanessa,” he added, his voice dropping an octave into an intimate register that carried across the sound system. “Whose dedication and... partnership have made everything we’ve achieved this year possible.”

A quiet murmur rippled through the front rows. Several people exchanged knowing glances.

Sienna stood at the back of the room, her lips curving into a slow, razor-sharp smile.

Enjoy your speech, Derrick, she thought. It’s your last one as a free man.
