Chapter 4 - THE BOARDROOM EXECUTIONThe 40th floor of the Sterling Tower was an fortress of dark wood, brass fixtures, and decades of old-money power.

When Victoria and I entered the grand boardroom, the atmosphere was suffocating. Seated around the thirty-foot mahogany table were six senior partners, all dressed in bespoke suits, looking like judges preparing for a sentencing.
At the head of the table sat Richard Sterling—a man in his late sixties with silver hair, piercing blue eyes, and a reputation for crushing anyone who threatened his firm's brand.
Beside him sat his daughter, Olivia.
Olivia looked immaculate in a cream-colored silk blouse and a tailored skirt. But beneath her polished exterior, I caught the subtle tremor in her fingers as she gripped her pen. She hadn't expected me to show up with Victoria Vance.
Ethan entered two minutes later, looking disheveled and pale. He tried to take his usual seat near Richard, but Richard didn't even look at him.
"Sit at the foot of the table, Ethan," Richard commanded, his voice deep and echoing off the glass walls.
Ethan swallowed hard and sat down, looking like a criminal in the dock.
"Mrs. Hayes," Richard said, turning his sharp gaze toward me, his tone softening slightly out of professional courtesy. "Thank you for coming. As you know, this firm values integrity above all else. The documents you sent to my assistant this morning contain serious allegations regarding my associate—and my daughter."
Olivia immediately spoke up, her voice dripping with artificial innocence. "Father, this is ridiculous. Mrs. Hayes is hysterical because Ethan told her he wanted a separation. She’s trying to drag my name through the mud to get a better settlement!"
I didn't lose my temper. I didn't raise my voice.
Instead, I opened my briefcase, pulled out a stack of bound financial reports, and handed one to each partner around the table, including Richard Sterling.
"If this were merely about an affair, Miss Sterling, I wouldn't have bothered coming to your father's office," I said smoothly. "I am here because your father is a businessman, and he deserves to know that while Ethan was sleeping in Suite 702, he was also systematically stealing from Sterling, Vance & Associates."
The room went dead silent.
Ethan slammed his hand on the table. "That's a lie! She's making it up!"
"Page four of the audit report, gentlemen," I continued, ignoring Ethan entirely. "Over the past twelve months, Ethan created six false billing entries under the 'Vance Merger Retainer' account. That money—totaling $1.8 million—was transferred into a shell corporation called Vanguard Holdings."
Richard Sterling turned the page, his face growing darker with every passing second.
"And if you look at page seven," I added, turning my eyes directly onto Olivia, "you will see that the corporate registry for Vanguard Holdings was executed using Miss Olivia Sterling’s personal notary stamp and digital signature."
Olivia’s face went completely white. She looked at the document, then at her father, her mouth opening and closing without making a sound.
"Olivia?" Richard asked, his voice low and dangerous as he turned to his daughter. "Is this your signature?"
"Father... I... Ethan told me it was a tax shelter for the firm!" Olivia stammered, panic finally cracking her refined facade. "He told me you approved it! He said we were setting up an independent subsidiary!"
"You lied to me!" Ethan roared, jumping out of his chair, pointing an accusing finger at Olivia. "You were the one who gave me the account routing numbers from your father's desk! You told me he was going to cut me out of the partnership!"
"Quiet!" Richard Sterling roared, slamming his fist onto the mahogany table so hard the water glasses rattled.
The room froze. Richard stood up slowly, his tall frame looming over the table. He didn't look at Ethan or Olivia with anger; he looked at them with utter, absolute contempt.
"Ethan Hayes," Richard said, his voice cold as iron. "You are stripped of your position as senior associate effective immediately. Security will escort you from this building in five minutes. By noon, the State Bar will have a full report of your financial fraud, and our criminal counsel will be filing charges for grand larceny."
Ethan sank back into his chair, his eyes hollow, his world collapsing into dust in a single sentence.
"And Olivia," Richard added, looking down at his daughter with a heartbreak that he could barely conceal. "You will resign from this firm today. You will surrender your law license, and you will check into a residential facility in California until the federal auditors finish reviewing your accounts."
Olivia burst into tears, burying her face in her hands.
Richard Sterling turned to me, offering a stiff, respectful nod.
"Mrs. Hayes," Richard said softly. "You have saved this firm from a catastrophic scandal. If there is anything Sterling, Vance & Associates can do to assist in your divorce proceedings, you have my personal guarantee that it will be done."
I stood up, adjusting my blazer, feeling a cool, clean sense of triumph washing over me.
"Thank you, Mr. Sterling," I said. "I believe your security guards can take it from here."

As I walked out of the boardroom, I passed Ethan. He looked up at me, his eyes filled with tears, silently pleading for mercy.
I didn't say a word. I simply kept walking toward the glass doors, stepping out into the bright morning sun.
