Chapter 2 - THE ANATOMY OF A SETUPAt 8:30 a.m., I sat in the glass-walled conference room on the 14th floor of the Mercer Legal Building.

Across from me sat Victoria Vance—one of the sharpest forensic family lawyers in the state, and the former founding partner of Ethan’s firm before she was squeezed out during a hostile restructuring three years ago. Victoria didn't look like a lawyer taking on a routine divorce; she looked like a general preparing for total war.

"Ethan thinks he's fighting a standard property division," Victoria said, sliding a thick leather binder across the polished glass table toward me. "He assumes you'll ask for fifty percent of the Oakridge home, half his pension, and some temporary alimony. He has no idea we’ve already mapped his offshore holdings."

I opened the binder. Inside were dozens of transaction logs, wire transfers, and shell company registries.

"How much did he siphon?" I asked, my voice steady despite the tightness in my chest.

"Over the past eighteen months, Ethan moved approximately 2.4 million dollars out of your joint marital estate into an entity registered in the Nevis Islands called Vanguard Holdings," Victoria explained, pointing her gold pen at a flowchart. "And guess who is listed as the secondary beneficiary of Vanguard Holdings?"

I stared at the name printed on the legal filing: Olivia Sterling.

A cold laugh escaped my throat. "He wasn't just having an affair with her. He was building a launchpad to exit the firm and start his own practice with her father's money."

"Or so he thought," Victoria countered, leaning back. "What Ethan doesn't realize is that Olivia isn't the innocent pawn he thinks she is. Olivia Sterling has her own legal team. She’s been feeding information about Ethan's accounting tricks to her father for months. She used Ethan to get access to his high-profile client lists, and once she has those, she’s going to throw him to the wolves."

The revelation hit me like a splash of ice water. Ethan thought he was the ultimate master manipulator—the brilliant strategist using a younger woman to gain leverage over her powerful father. In reality, he was caught between two far more dangerous women who were both ready to destroy him.

"So Olivia is playing him," I murmured.

"She’s playing both of you," Victoria corrected. "She expects you to ruin Ethan publicly so she can play the victimized associate who was manipulated by a senior partner. That way, her father protects her, Ethan takes the criminal fall for the tax evasion, and she steps directly into his office."

I stared at the documents, my mind racing through the financial matrices I had spent weeks analyzing in secret.

"Then we change the narrative," I said, looking up into Victoria's sharp grey eyes. "We don't just expose Ethan's affair to Richard Sterling. We expose the fact that Vanguard Holdings was funded using stolen retainer fees from Sterling's biggest corporate clients."

Victoria’s eyebrows shot up in admiration. "You want to hit the firm directly?"

"I want Ethan to realize that the trap he set for me was built around his own neck," I said softly. "By noon today, I want a court freeze on every account associated with Vanguard Holdings. If Ethan wants to pay his rent tomorrow, he’ll have to ask his mistress for a loan."

Just then, the glass doors of the conference room swung open. Victoria’s assistant hurried in, looking flustered.

"Ms. Vance, Mr. Ethan Hayes is downstairs in the lobby," the assistant reported quickly. "He’s demanding to see Mrs. Hayes. He brought two security guards from his firm."

Victoria looked at me. "Do you want security to escort him off the property?"

"No," I said, standing up and buttoning my dark blazer. "Let him come up. It’s time Ethan realized that the courtroom he’s stepping into isn't one he can win."
