Chapter 3 - The Boardroom ShowdownThe double doors of the thirty-seventh-floor executive boardroom were unlocked, but the atmosphere inside felt thick enough to cut with a diamond saw.

As Nathan pushed the door open, pulling me gently behind him by the hand, all conversation ceased instantly.
Around the massive, custom-built quartz conference table sat six members of Northstar’s board of directors, their faces carved with deep disapproval. At the far end, sitting in Nathan’s usual leather chair, was Eleanor Vance.
She was breathtaking—tall, immaculately styled in a bespoke Chanel houndstooth suit, blonde hair pulled back into a severe, elegant chignon, her diamond earrings catching the midday sun streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Beside her stood two senior partners from Vance Global Legal, holding thick leather-bound portfolios.
Eleanor slowly lowered her porcelain teacup to its saucer, her sharp blue eyes shifting from Nathan’s face down to our interlaced fingers. A cold, sardonic smile touched her lips.
"Well," Eleanor drawled, her British accent clipping through the quiet room with razor-sharp precision. "I fly twelve hours across the Atlantic to secure a multi-billion-dollar merger, and my intended husband greets me by parading his... what is she? An analyst? A junior programmer?—through the executive suite."
Nathan stepped forward, shielding me slightly with his shoulder, though I refused to shrink away.
"Maya Bennett is the lead data architect of our core forecasting division, Eleanor," Nathan said, his voice smooth and lethally calm. "And she is the only woman who will ever wear my ring."
A collective gasp echoed around the boardroom. One of the elderly board members, Arthur Pendelton, dropped his fountain pen against the glass table with a sharp clatter.
"Nathaniel, have you lost your absolute mind?!" Pendelton barked, standing up so fast his chair wobbled. "The Vance partnership represents four hundred million in seed liquidity and international distribution rights! If you breach the matrimonial covenant clause, the equity syndicate will execute immediate receivership!"
"Let them execute it," Nathan replied without missing a beat. "The primary clause of the original 2023 equity agreement stipulates that the marriage covenant becomes null and void if the primary stakeholder fails to disclose material conflicts of interest regarding offshore tax liabilities—liabilities which Vance Global Legal conveniently omitted during the initial SEC filings."
One of the lawyers standing beside Eleanor instantly paled, leaning down to whisper frantically in her ear.
Eleanor’s polished composure fractured for a split second, her blue eyes narrowing into slits. "You bluffing, Nathan. You don't have those documents."
Nathan reached into his inner suit pocket, pulled out a slim manila folder, and tossed it casually onto the center of the table, right next to Eleanor’s teacup.
"My general counsel pulled them from the federal registry in Geneva at 4:00 AM this morning," Nathan said. "So here are your choices, Eleanor: You can sign the dissolution agreement voluntarily right now, walk away with your initial capital plus a ten percent advisory premium, and let Northstar remain an independent American corporation... or I hand this folder to the Department of Justice before the closing bell."
The silence in the boardroom was absolute. You could hear the distant wail of a police siren floating up from Chicago streets thirty-seven floors below.
Eleanor stared at the manila folder as if it were a venomous snake. The power dynamic in the room had shifted violently in less than sixty seconds. The golden-boy CEO she expected to bully into submission had turned out to be a tactical mastermind who had anticipated her chess move months in advance.
"You're a ruthless bastard, Nathan," Eleanor hissed softly, standing up smoothing her skirt with trembling fingers. She grabbed her designer handbag from the floor. "We’re done here. But mark my words—without our distribution network, your little tech startup will crumble within a quarter."
"We’ll take our chances," Nathan replied evenly.
With a furious swirl of her Chanel jacket, Eleanor spun on her heel and stormed toward the private elevator, her two legal beagles scrambling behind her like frightened ducklings. The heavy glass doors hissed shut behind them, leaving the board members staring at Nathan in stunned, terrified silence.
Arthur Pendelton cleared his throat awkwardly, adjusting his tie. "Well... emergency averted, I suppose. Meeting adjourned?"
May you like
"Dismissed, Arthur," Nathan said quietly.
As the board members hastily gathered their laptops and shuffled out of the room like scolded schoolboys, the massive double doors closed once more, leaving just the two of us standing in the center of the sunlit sanctuary.
