Chapter 5 - The Truth in the CodeJulian lunged forward, the heavy steel handcuffs clinking sharply against the metal arm of the chair. The two federal guards instantly reacted, grabbing him by the shoulders and slamming him back down onto the plastic seat with bone-crushing force.

"Get away from me!" Julian roared, straining against them, his eyes locked on Marcus Vance, who stood beside Elena with his hands casually tucked into the pockets of his overcoat.
Marcus didn't flinch. He simply looked down at Julian with a cold, analytical gaze—the kind of look a scientist might give a particularly uninteresting specimen under a microscope.
"You," Julian choked out, spittle flying from his lips. "You son of a bitch. You were in my house. You ate at my table. You drank my scotch!"
"And you funded my research grant at the genome institute, Julian," Marcus replied smoothly, his voice deep and unhurried. "Without your generous corporate sponsorships through Meridian Healthcare's charitable foundation, my team wouldn't have finished our clinical trials on hereditary chromosomal markers. So, really, I should be thanking you."
Julian’s head whipped back toward Elena, his face purple with rage and disbelief. "You... you planned this. How long? How long has this been going on?"
Elena stepped forward, her heels clicking rhythmically against the polished floor. She stopped just out of arm's reach, looking down at him as if he were a bug she had accidentally stepped on.
"From the very beginning, Julian," Elena said softly. "The day you married me while secretly knowing you were sterile, hoping you could trap a woman into carrying your family's fraudulent legacy—you signed a contract built entirely on a lie. You assumed my silence meant weakness. You assumed my patience meant stupidity."
"I gave you everything!" Julian screamed, drawing the attention of everyone in the federal lobby. "I put a roof over your head! I gave you status, financial security, a name—"
"A name that was a stolen banner," Elena interrupted, her voice cutting through his hysteria like a razor. "You didn't give me security, Julian. You gave me a cage. And while you were busy flying to Aspen with your twenty-four-year-old mistress, funding her lifestyle with embezzled funds from my grandfather's healthcare investments..."
She paused, turning slightly to look at Marcus, who gave her a reassuring nod.
"...I was busy auditing your entire existence," Elena finished. "Every offshore account. Every fake receipt. Every corporate bribe. And yes, every genetic marker."
Julian slumped back against the plastic chair, the fight completely draining out of him. The anger evaporated, leaving behind a cold, hollow terror. He looked at Elena—really looked at her—and realized he had never known her at all. He had fallen in love with a reflection she had projected for him, while the real woman had been quietly operating miles above his comprehension.
"What about Harrison?" Julian whispered, his voice cracking into a pathetic whine. "He’s my son. I raised him for two years. I taught him how to walk. I put him to bed every night."
"You were a prop in his life, Julian, just like I was a prop in yours," Elena said, her voice softening, not with pity, but with finality. "Except Marcus is his biological father. And as of this morning, family court has terminated every legal, moral, and biological tie you ever claimed to have with my son."
She turned on her heel, signaling to Jacqueline and Marcus.
"Let's go," Elena said quietly. "We have a flight to catch."
"Where?" Julian shouted desperately as they turned toward the elevator. "Where are you going?"
Elena didn't look back. But Jacqueline Ross paused, glancing over her shoulder with a cold, professional smile.
"Away from you, Mr. Blackwood," Jacqueline said. "And into a life where your name is nothing more than a bad memory in a federal indictment."
The elevator doors slid shut, sealing them off from his sight forever.
Julian sat alone in the lobby, flanked by federal guards who looked like they wanted nothing more than to go home for the holidays. Penelope was weeping softly beside him, her face buried in her hands, realizing too late that the empire she had spent her life constructing had been built on a foundation of sand.

"Mr. Blackwood," Agent Miller said, stepping out from the hallway with a pair of transfer forms in his hand. "Time to go back to holding. Your arraignment is at 2:00 PM."
Julian didn't fight. He didn't speak. He simply stood up, let the guards pull his arms back behind his body, and allowed himself to be led away into the dark, cold belly of the federal facility, leaving the ghost of his stolen life behind in the snow.
