Chapter 6 - The Clean SlateTwo months after the sentencing, the autumn leaves across Michigan turned brilliant shades of amber, crimson, and gold, carpeting the winding driveways of Bloomfield Hills in a thick blanket of color.

I sat behind the massive mahogany desk in my corner office on the thirty-second floor of Apex Strategy. The gold nameplate resting on the polished surface bore a single, powerful line of text: Stephanie Reed, Chief Executive Officer & Sole Founder.

The corporate restructuring was entirely complete. Under my leadership, the firm had secured three major international contracts, completely purging the toxic, bloated bureaucracy Justin had tried to cultivate during his tenure as COO. The scandal had faded from the front pages, replaced by profiles in financial journals celebrating my leadership during the hostile corporate takeover and forensic audit.

As for Justin? He was currently assigned to a medium-security federal correctional facility in Milan, spending his days working in the prison laundry room, entirely abandoned by Rachel—who had fled to Florida with her cousin after Marcus Vance also severed all ties and refused to acknowledge paternity of the twins. Martha had quietly sold her Bloomfield Hills estate and relocated to a small retirement community in Arizona, living out her final years in bitter, self-imposed isolation.

My phone buzzed gently against the desk.

It was an email notification from Julian Vance:

“Final deed transfer for the secondary lake house completed this morning. It’s officially 100% in your name, free and clear of all encumbrances. Congratulations, Stephanie. You survived the storm.”

I smiled, locking my computer screen and walking over to the floor-to-ceiling glass windows.

The sprawling skyline of Detroit stretched out beneath me, bright, clear, and endless under the afternoon sun. For twelve years, I had believed my worth was defined by a man who looked down on me, by a marriage built on hidden lies, and by a fabricated narrative of personal failure.

Now, looking out at the golden horizon, I finally understood the truth my grandmother had taught me when I was just a little girl:

“Never fear the silence, child. When the world tries to bury you in lies, silence is where you sharpen your blade.”

My name is Stephanie Reed.

And for the first time in my life, every single breath, every single victory, and every single tomorrow belongs entirely to me.
