Chapter 3 - The Asset FreezeBy Tuesday afternoon, the corporate offices of Apex Strategy were humming with a tense, hyper-focused energy.

I sat at the head of the sleek glass conference table on the thirty-second floor, flanked by Julian Vance and two senior forensic auditors from Deloitte. Projected onto the smart board at the front of the room was an intricate, color-coded flowchart mapping out every illegal wire transfer Justin had authorized over the past fourteen months.
“The total siphon amount currently sits at eight hundred and forty-two thousand dollars,” the lead auditor, a sharp-eyed woman named Karen, explained as she pointed a laser pointer at a crimson-highlighted node. “Mr. Gilbert systematically bypassed internal compliance protocols by utilizing his executive signing authority to approve vendor invoices from Apex Marketing Solutions—a dummy corporation registered in Delaware under Rachel Vance’s maiden name and her cousin’s tax identification number.”
Julian adjusted his glasses, sliding a formal legal brief toward me. “And because Justin explicitly signed the preliminary marital settlement agreement yesterday afternoon—certifying under penalty of perjury that all financial disclosures were complete and free of hidden liabilities—he has committed felony fraud on two distinct fronts: civil marital asset concealment and federal corporate wire fraud.”
“What is the maximum sentencing guideline for the federal charges?” I asked calmly, tracing the edge of my tablet.
“Up to twenty years in a federal penitentiary,” Julian replied without missing a beat. “And because we secured the emergency asset freeze this morning at 9:00 AM, every single personal account, credit card, investment portfolio, and liquid asset in Justin’s name has been locked tight. His corporate credit cards were declined an hour ago while he was attempting to purchase designer strollers at a boutique in downtown Birmingham.”
A quiet, satisfying warmth settled in my chest.
At that exact moment, the heavy oak doors of the conference room burst open.
Justin stood in the doorway. He looked entirely unraveled. His high-end Italian suit was wrinkled, his hair was messy, and his face was flushed with frantic, unbridled rage. Two building security guards stood immediately behind him, their hands hovering near their belts, having tried unsuccessfully to block his advance past the reception desk.
“Stephanie!” Justin roared, storming into the room and slamming both palms onto the glass conference table. “What the hell is wrong with you?! My corporate AmEx just got declined at a baby boutique! They told me my primary accounts are frozen! Did you pull some petty, vindictive stunt just because you couldn't handle our divorce?”
The auditors stepped back quietly, while Julian remained seated, folding his hands with cool professional detachment.
I didn't flinch. I slowly swivelled my executive chair to face him, crossing my legs and resting my chin in my hand.
“Good afternoon, Justin,” I said, my tone as breezy as if we were discussing the weather. “You look stressed. Did something ruin your morning?”
“Don't play games with me!” he shouted, spittle flying as his face twisted into an ugly snarl. “You froze my accounts! You had security stop my credit cards! Do you have any idea how humiliating that was? I have twins to support! Rachel needs funds! Unfreeze my accounts right now, or I will take you to court and sue you for every single penny of Apex Strategy!”
I let out a soft, mocking laugh. It was the exact sound he had never expected to hear from me—a sound stripped of all fear, hesitation, and deference.
“Sue me with what money, Justin?” I asked sweetly. “With the money sitting in your frozen personal accounts? Or with the funds from your offshore shell companies?”
Justin’s color drained instantly. The furious red flush on his cheeks turned a sickly, chalky gray. His eyes darted nervously toward Julian, then back to me.
“What... what are you talking about?” he stammered, his voice dropping an octave as panic finally broke through his defensive armor.
I stood up slowly, smoothing down the lapels of my tailored blazer. I picked up a thick manila folder from the table and tossed it directly onto his chest. It hit him with a heavy, ominous thud.
“Read it,” I whispered. “Page four, section two. That’s the forensic audit of Apex Marketing Solutions. It details every single dollar you stole from my company to pay for Rachel’s penthouse and nursery. And right beneath it... is your mother’s medical report.”
Justin’s hands trembled violently as he opened the folder. His eyes scanned the first page, catching the clinical letterhead of the Ann Arbor Medical Center, followed by the explicit diagnosis from nineteen years ago: Azoospermia. Non-obstructive. Permanent sterility.
The folder slipped from his fingers, scattering financial statements and medical charts across the polished conference room floor.
“No...” Justin breathed, stumbling backward until his spine hit the glass wall. “No... that’s... that’s impossible. That’s fake. You forged this!”

“Ask your mother,” I said, stepping closer until I was standing right in front of him, looking up into his terrified, dilated eyes. “She’s the one who mailed it to me. She’s the one who spent twelve years helping you lie to yourself—and letting me take the blame for your biological failure.”
Justin grabbed his hair with both hands, sliding down the glass wall until he was sitting on the carpet, staring blankly at the scattered papers. The invincible titan of Bloomfield Hills had completely collapsed in less than sixty seconds.
