Chapter 2 - The Five O'Clock AwakeningAt 4:55 AM, the master suite of Sterling Manor was bathed in the pale, cool light of dawn breaking over the vineyard hills. Andrew stirred in the king-sized bed

His phone, resting on the mahogany nightstand, suddenly vibrated.
At first, it was a single buzz. Then another. Then a relentless, unbroken chain of digital notifications that buzzed like an angry hornet trapped against glass.
Groaning in annoyance, Andrew blinked his eyes open, rubbed the sleep from his face, and reached blindly for the device. He swiped the screen, expecting an alert from his broker or a confirmation from his morning golf club reservation. Instead, a wall of crimson warning banners glared back at him from his banking apps.
CRITICAL ALERT: ACCOUNT FROZEN.
CRITICAL ALERT: UNAUTHORIZED TRANSFER - BALANCE ZERO.
CRITICAL ALERT: CORPORATE LINE OF CREDIT REVOKED.
Andrew sat bolt upright in bed, his heart hammering against his ribs. "What the hell...?" he muttered, his voice thick with sleep and sudden, creeping dread.
He tapped frantically on his primary checking account—the one that funded his personal lifestyle, his luxury cars, and his monthly allowance to his mother. The screen refreshed with a stark, brutal white banner: BALANCE: $0.00.
"Brenda," Andrew choked out, shaking her shoulder roughly. "Brenda, wake up."
Brenda stirred, pulling the silk sheet up over her chest with a sleepy frown. "Andrew, what is it? It's the middle of the night..."
"Look at this," he stammered, shoving the glowing phone screen into her face. "My accounts... they're gone. All of them. They're locked out."
Before Brenda could fully comprehend the words, a sharp, deafening pound echoed against the heavy oak front door downstairs. Bang. Bang. Bang.
Down the hall, a door clicked open. Margaret’s voice rang out, sharp and irritated, cutting through the morning silence. "Security! Who on earth is hammering at the front door at this ungodly hour? Go deal with it immediately!"
Andrew threw off the covers, his bare feet hitting the imported hardwood floor. He pulled on a silk bathrobe with trembling hands and rushed out onto the second-floor balcony that overlooked the grand foyer.
Below him, three men in dark suits stood just inside the open front entrance. Leading them was a county sheriff's deputy holding a thick stack of legal documents, flanked by two armed officers.
"Margaret Sterling?" the deputy called out loudly, his voice echoing off the marble pillars.
Margaret appeared at the top of the opposite staircase, wrapped in her velvet designer robe, her face twisted in absolute fury. "I am Margaret Sterling! How dare you barge into my home? Do you know who my family is? Get out of my house this instant, or I will have your badges by noon!"
The deputy did not flinch. He stepped forward and held out the top document. "Mrs. Sterling, you are served with an immediate writ of possession, foreclosure notice, and asset seizure order issued by the State Superior Court on behalf of Escalante Holdings."
The word hung in the air like a guillotine blade.
Escalante Holdings.
Andrew froze halfway down the stairs, his breath catching in his throat. Escalante? That was the legendary, multi-billion-dollar global conglomerate that operated in total secrecy behind the scenes of half the state's commercial infrastructure. It was a name whispered with reverence in boardrooms—a corporate titan that possessed more wealth than old money families like the Sterlings could dream of generating in three lifetimes.
"There... there's been a mistake," Andrew stammered, running down the stairs toward the deputy, his face pale as death. "This is Sterling Manor. This property belongs to my family. We have owned this estate for decades!"

The deputy looked at Andrew with cold, professional pity. "Not anymore, Mr. Sterling. According to the master title deed registered and executed twenty minutes ago, this entire estate—every square inch of land, every painting on the wall, and every vehicle in the garage—belongs exclusively to Mariana Escalante."
The name dropped into the foyer, and the silence that followed was absolute, terrifying, and complete.
