Chapter 5 - The Counter-Strike Against Vance GlobalThe war room on the forty-fifth floor was practically vibrating with nervous energy.

By Tuesday afternoon, the corporate purge had sent shockwaves through the entire Chicago financial district. The sudden resignation of five senior vice presidents at Ashford Global had hit the front pages of the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg, triggering a temporary dip in our stock value that had Wall Street analysts screaming about internal chaos.

They thought we were weak. They thought the empire was fracturing from within.

That was exactly what we wanted them to think.

Julian Vance—the ruthless, predatory managing director of Vance Global Logistics and the mastermind behind the corporate espionage campaign that Ethan had unknowingly walked into—took the bait faster than a starving shark.

At 2:00 PM, my private secretary buzzed my desk.

"Ms. Ashford," her voice came through the intercom, tight with suppressed excitement. "Julian Vance is holding on line two. He’s requesting an emergency private meeting at the executive lounge on the fiftieth floor. He says it’s regarding an 'urgent hostile acquisition proposal.'"

I looked across the desk at my father and Marcus, both of whom grinned like wolves circling a trapped deer.

"Put him on speaker, Sarah," I instructed smoothly, pressing a button on my console.

"Sophia," Julian Vance’s slick, self-assured voice filled the office, dripping with faux-sympathy and predatory arrogance. "I heard about the absolute bloodbath on your executive floor yesterday. Such a tragedy. Losing half your senior management team right before the Q3 logistics bids... must be terribly stressful for someone with your... limited corporate experience."

I leaned back in my ergonomic leather chair, twirling a heavy silver pen between my fingers. "It has been a busy twenty-four hours, Julian. But you know what they say about cleaning house—you have to throw out the garbage before you can see the clean floor."

There was a brief, awkward pause on the other end of the line. Julian cleared his throat, recovering his slippery rhythm. "Right. Well, let's skip the corporate spin. Ashford Global is vulnerable right now. Your stock is down four percent, your logistics contracts are up for renewal, and your board is in open panic. Vance Global is prepared to make a... merciful offer. We'll absorb your shipping infrastructure at sixty cents on the dollar, and we'll let you step down gracefully as a consultant."

I exchanged a amused glance with my father, who was shaking his head with a low chuckle.

"That's a very generous offer, Julian," I said, letting a faux-vulnerability creep into my tone. "Almost too generous. How do I know Vance Global has the liquidity to back a multi-billion-dollar absorption right now?"

"My dear Sophia, our liquidity is backed by several private international equity funds," Julian laughed, clearly thinking he had reeled me in. "We have the capital ready to wire the moment you sign the preliminary terms sheet. Meet me at the St. Regis executive lounge in one hour. We can have a drink, sign the papers, and put your little family company out of its misery."

"One hour," I replied, my voice dropping into a razor-sharp register. "Don't order champagne yet, Julian. You might not like the toast."

I disconnected the call before he could formulate a response.

"Marcus," I said, standing up and buttoning my suit jacket. "Is the SEC compliance unit stationed in the lobby?"

"Waiting in the secure briefing room, complete with federal marshals and digital forensics specialists," Marcus answered, standing up with a sharp grin. "They've got warrants for wire fraud, insider trading, and corporate espionage signed by a federal judge who happens to be an old classmate of your father's."

My father stood up as well, walking over to me and adjusting my lapel with a tender, fiercely proud expression. "Go finish them, my girl," he whispered. "Show them what an Ashford does when someone tries to steal her house."

Thirty minutes later, I stepped out of the private elevator onto the penthouse level of the St. Regis hotel.

The executive lounge was a masterpiece of glass, velvet, and polished chrome, overlooking the frozen expanse of Lake Michigan. Sitting at a corner table by the floor-to-ceiling windows was Julian Vance. He wore a crisp, tailored navy suit, a smug, triumphant smile plastered across his face as he swirled a glass of scotch, staring out at the city he thought he was about to conquer.

I walked across the plush carpet, my heels clicking rhythmically, carrying a sleek leather briefcase in my left hand.

Julian looked up, his eyes sweeping over me with undisguised condescension. He didn't stand up. He didn't offer a chair.

"Sophia," Julian smirked, gesturing to the empty seat opposite him. "I must admit, I didn't think you had the stomach to face me yourself. Where's your father? Too heartbroken to watch his legacy get dismantled?"

I didn't answer his question. I pulled out the chair, sat down gracefully, placed my briefcase flat on the table, and popped the latches.

"Let's get straight to business, Julian," I said, opening the folder. "You mentioned your liquidity is backed by international equity funds."

"That's right," Julian chuckled, leaning forward, resting his elbows on the table. "Funds that are ready to wire the capital the second you sign the buyout agreement. Here is the terms sheet." He pushed a crisp document across the table.

I didn't look at the terms sheet. Instead, I reached into my briefcase, pulled out a stack of printed financial records stamped with federal compliance seals, and slid them across the mahogany table directly on top of his papers.

Julian frowned, glancing down at the first page. The smug smile instantly melted off his face.

"What... what is this?" he muttered, his eyes scanning the lines of data.

"Those are the exact wire routing numbers of the 'international equity funds' backing your buyout," I said, my voice as cold and hard as a diamond. "Except they aren't international equity funds, Julian. They're the exact same Cayman Island shell accounts that Arthur Sterling and Ethan Carter used to embezzle three point five million dollars from Ashford Global."

Julian’s face turned the color of ash. He gripped the edge of the table so hard his knuckles turned white. "You're... you're insane. This is fabricated—"

"Is it?" I interrupted, raising my hand and tapping a single finger against the glass of my watch.

Right on cue, the private elevators behind the lounge pinged.

The double doors slid open. Four armed federal marshals, flanked by two senior SEC compliance officers and Marcus Vance, walked briskly into the lounge.

Julian scrambled to his feet, knocking his scotch glass over. The amber liquid spilled in a dark, spreading stain across the white tablecloth.

"Julian Vance," the lead federal marshal stated loudly, pulling a folded document from his coat pocket as he stepped up to the table. "You are under arrest for conspiracy, wire fraud, insider trading, and corporate racketeering. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

The entire lounge fell into a stunned, horrified silence. Wealthy patrons dining nearby dropped their forks, staring in absolute disbelief as the master predator of Chicago’s financial district was cuffed and hauled away toward the elevators without a single word of protest.

I remained seated at the table. I picked up my coffee cup, took a slow, calm sip, and watched Julian disappear behind the closing steel doors.

He had wanted to absorb Ashford Global.

Instead, he had just become our company's most expensive cautionary tale.
