Chapter 5 - The Unwanted ReflectionWhen you try to steal another woman's life, don't be surprised when you're left holding the wreckage of your own.

One year later.

The local supermarket on the outskirts of the city was quiet on a rainy Thursday afternoon.

I walked down the organic produce aisle, holding a small wicker basket, wearing a casual beige trench coat and designer sunglasses. My life had expanded beyond my wildest dreams. Apex Consulting was now a multi-national firm, and I had just purchased my dream country estate in the hills.

As I reached for a box of fresh berries, a squeaky, rusted shopping cart wheel squeaked behind me.

"Excuse me..." a voice rasped.

I turned around.

Rachel stood three feet away from me.

She looked twenty years older. Her hair was dry and unkempt, gathered in a messy clip. She wore a stained, oversized sweatshirt and worn sneakers. In the metal child seat of her grocery cart sat two eighteen-month-old twins, both crying loudly, their faces smeared with food. Her cart was filled with cheap store-brand formula, generic diapers, and discounted canned goods.

When Rachel recognized me, her hand froze on the handle of her cart.

She looked at my pristine coat, my luxury handbag, my glowing skin, and the quiet, magnificent aura of success radiating from me.

"Clara..." Rachel whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of embarrassment, resentment, and profound exhaustion.

I looked at her, offering a polite, distant nod. "Hello, Rachel."

Rachel’s eyes welled with bitter tears as she looked down at her screaming twins, then back at me.

"You knew, didn't you?" Rachel choked out, her knuckles turning white on the shopping cart. "That night... when Justin left you. You knew he wasn't the father."

"I knew," I said simply.

"You let him walk away," Rachel whispered, tears streaming down her unwashed face. "You let him come to me, knowing my life would turn into this! You ruined my life, Clara!"

I took a slow step closer to her, looking down at her with calm, absolute authority.

"I didn't ruin your life, Rachel," I said smoothly. "You spent twelve years pretending to be my best friend while sleeping with my husband. You tried to trap a man with another man's children to steal my company's wealth. You destroyed yourself the moment you decided to build your happiness on my pain."

Rachel opened her mouth to argue, but no words came out. The bitter truth burned in her throat like acid.

"I hope you raise those children well," I added softly, picking up my basket. "Because unlike their mother, they deserve a real chance at life."

I walked past her, the smooth heels of my boots clicking against the polished linoleum floor, leaving Rachel standing alone in the quiet aisle with her screaming children and her ruined dreams.
