Chapter 2 - Waking in the ShadowsI woke up three days later in the Intensive Care Unit.

The scent of sterile antiseptic was heavy in the air, accompanied by the gentle, mechanical hiss of a ventilator tube being drawn from my throat. My body felt as though it had been run over by a freight train. A long surgical incision stretched across my abdomen where Dr. Vance had performed an emergency hysterectomy and arterial repair to save my life.
I had lost more than half my blood volume. I had died for nearly three minutes on that table.
Sitting in the vinyl armchair beside my bed was Dr. Victor Vance, his face etched with exhaustion. Standing by the window, staring out at the Manhattan skyline with a stern, unyielding expression, was my elder brother, Julian Grant—a top corporate trial attorney known across the East Coast as "The Executioner."
"Amelia," Julian said the moment he saw my eyelids flutter open. He was at my bedside in a second, his large, warm hand gripping mine with gentle fiercely protective strength. "Don't try to speak yet, sweetie. You're safe. You're in the ICU."
"My... my baby..." I managed to croak out, my throat raw and burning.
"He's perfect, Amelia," Dr. Vance said warmly, stepping closer and showing me a tablet screen displaying a live video feed from the Neonatal ICU. "Ten pounds, two ounces. He sustained a minor shoulder dystocia during delivery, but our pediatric orthopedic team resolved it. He’s strong, healthy, and breathing on his own. He’s waiting for his mother."
Tears spilled over my cheeks—not from pain, but from profound, overwhelming relief. My baby boy was safe.
"What... what about Cameron?" I whispered, the name tasting like ash in my mouth.
Julian’s jaw tightened, his dark eyes flashing with a terrifying, cold fury.
"Cameron suffered a stress-induced vasovagal syncope and a minor concussion when he hit the floor," Julian said, his voice dropping into an icy register. "He woke up in the VIP wing eight hours later. He tried to come into this room to see you and the baby."
"Did you let him?" I asked softly.
"I had a temporary restraining order issued within two hours of taking your power of attorney," Julian replied flatly. "When he refused to leave the hallway, I had hospital security and two uniformed officers handle him. He was escorted off the hospital premises in handcuffs for trespassing and violating a medical exclusion order."
Dr. Vance sighed, crossing his arms. "Amelia, as the Chief of Emergency Medicine, you need to know what’s happening administratively. The surgical review board met yesterday morning. I presented the nursing logs, the EKG telemetry, and the broken bed rail."
He looked at me with deep sympathy.
"Cameron’s medical license has been suspended pending a formal investigation by the State Medical Board for gross negligence and willful endangerment. The hospital board has officially terminated his contract."
I closed my eyes, letting the reality settle in. The man I had built a life with for seven years—the man whose career I had helped build, whose medical papers I had co-authored—had burned his own life to the ground in a single night of arrogant cruelty.
"And Sophie?" I asked, remembering the intern's wicked smile as she dug her nails into my arm.
Julian smiled—a sharp, predatory grin that sent a shiver down my spine.

"Miss Sophie Reed is currently learning that lying on a formal medical report to cover up patient abuse carries severe criminal consequences," Julian said coldly. "She’s been expelled from the residency program and faces charges of falsifying medical records and reckless endangerment."
Julian leaned closer, kissing my forehead. "Rest now, Amelia. When you walk out of this hospital, Cameron Bennett will be nothing more than a bad memory."
