Chapter 1 - The Resuscitation and the CollapseThe high-pitched, continuous drone of the EKG flatline tore through the delivery room, shattering the fragile silence that had briefly followed my baby’s first cry.

00/00 mmHg.

My vision flickered, narrowing into a pinpoint of dark, suffocating gray. Cold sweat poured off my forehead as my skin turned an ashen, ghost-like white. The severe uterine rupture—caused by forcing a ten-pound baby through an unyielding pelvis without an epidural—had torn through major arterial branches. Blood was flooding my abdominal cavity at an alarming rate.

"Disseminated intravascular coagulation! Massive internal hemorrhage!" the senior assisting nurse shrieked, slamming the emergency code button on the wall. "Code Blue! Obstetrics, Room 4! We need a crash cart and massive transfusion protocol right now!"

The room dissolved into controlled chaos. Medical staff burst through the double doors.

Cameron stood frozen in the center of the room. His surgical gloves were covered in my blood, his eyes wide with a paralyzing, terrifying realization. The arrogant, untouchable demeanor he had worn minutes earlier evaporated, replaced by the sheer, unadulterated horror of a doctor who realized he had just committed medical murder.

"Amelia..." Cameron stammered, taking a trembling step toward the bed. "Amelia, keep your eyes open! Look at me!"

I tried to turn my head, but my body refused to respond. My heart had stopped beating. I was an Emergency Medicine Chief—I knew what cardiac arrest felt like from the inside. The room was slipping away.

"Get him out of the way!" screamed Dr. Victor Vance, the Chief of Surgery, as he slammed through the doors. He shoved Cameron aside with such force that Cameron stumbled into the stainless-steel instrument tray, sending surgical tools clattering loudly across the floor.

"She’s in PEA arrest!" Dr. Vance yelled, jumping onto the side of my bed and beginning high-quality chest compressions. "Charge the paddles to 200 Joules! Hang six units of O-negative blood under pressure! Where is the trauma team?!"

Sophie, the intern who had manipulated Cameron into this nightmare, backed into the corner of the room, her hands clamped over her mouth. She stared at the pool of blood spreading across the floor, her carefully rehearsed tears turning into real, frantic panic as she realized the legal hurricane about to consume her.

"Dr. Bennett!" Dr. Vance roared over the noise of the alarms as he pumped my chest. "Your wife is bleeding to death because you ignored standard OB protocol! Get out of this room before I have security throw you out!"

Cameron looked down at his blood-soaked hands. He looked at the cracked bed rail I had snapped in two during my agonizing labor. Then he looked at my lifeless face.

The sheer weight of what he had done—the malice, the arrogance, the blind trust he had placed in a scheming intern over his brilliant wife— hit him like a physical blow.

His knees buckled.

A choked, pathetic gasp tore from Cameron's throat. His eyes rolled back into his head, and the feared Chief of Surgery collapsed face-first onto the blood-stained floor of the delivery room, unconscious.

"Ignore him!" Dr. Vance ordered the crash team. "Focus on Amelia! Clear!"

THUMP.

The electric current surged through my chest. My body jolted off the mattress.

In the fading darkness of my mind, I didn't think about Cameron. I didn't think about the betrayal. I thought about the faint, fragile cry of my ten-pound baby boy.

I have to live, I told myself in the black void. My son needs me.

THUMP.

A faint spike flickered on the EKG monitor.
