Chapter 5 - The PurgeThe next seventy-two hours felt like a Category 5 hurricane hitting the corporate headquarters of Pinnacle Enterprises.

By Saturday morning, every corporate account linked to Brendan had been frozen. His name was scrubbed from the lobby directory, his office suite was cleared out by two junior associates with cardboard boxes, and his luxury company car—a midnight-black Maybach—was towed from his assigned parking space before noon.

Claire tried to storm the corporate offices on Monday morning, demanding an audience with the board of directors to protest what she called a "malicious coup." She was stopped at the security desk in the lobby by two federal marshals who served her with a court summons for wrongful interference and harassment, accompanied by an immediate restraining order barring her from coming within five hundred feet of any Appleton-owned property.

Sabrina Miller vanished completely. Within twenty-four hours of the gala, her social media accounts were deleted, her apartment lease in downtown Manhattan was suddenly terminated, and rumors swirled among the financial district gossip columns that she had boarded a one-way flight to Zurich, abandoning Brendan entirely now that his bank accounts were locked and his credit cards declined.

I sat behind the massive mahogany desk on the forty-fifth floor—the CEO’s office that Brendan had occupied for five years. The heavy oak door was propped open, and sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire city skyline.

Andy Ashworth knocked gently on the doorframe before stepping inside, carrying a thick binder of legal documents.

"Good morning, Mrs. Alcott," Andy said, offering a respectful, genuine smile. "The federal prosecutors have accepted the forensic audit files. Given the scale of the misappropriated funds and the shell companies Brendan set up, the district attorney's office is preparing formal grand jury indictments for wire fraud and embezzlement. He’s looking at a minimum of eight to twelve years."

I didn't look up from the financial restructuring charts I was reviewing. "And his legal representation?"

"His previous defense attorneys dropped him this morning when they realized his remaining personal assets were tied up in our counter-suits," Andy replied, placing the binder on the desk. "He’s currently living out of a budget motel near the airport, trying to call former associates who won't even pick up his calls."

I closed the folder and leaned back in the leather executive chair, looking out over the city. For ten years, I had allowed myself to be defined by a man’s ego, hidden behind cardigans and quiet obedience, believing that protecting my peace meant hiding my power. But tyranny only survives as long as the oppressed agree to stay silent.

"What about the restructuring of the regional development wing?" I asked.

"Completely overhauled," Andy said. "Every executive loyal to Brendan’s old corrupt network has been terminated or reassigned. The board has voted unanimously to ratify you as the permanent, active Chairwoman and CEO of Pinnacle Enterprises, effective immediately."

"Good," I said, standing up smoothly. "Let's schedule a full board meeting for Wednesday morning. It's time to show the investors what a real company looks like when it's built on competence instead of stolen credit."
