Chapter 5 - The Shadow's Revenge

Three weeks after the boardroom takeover, Vance-Cassel Holdings had been fully restructured under my leadership.
With Mason's guidance and my passion for art and architecture, we announced the creation of the Cassel Cultural Center—a fifty-million-dollar public initiative to transform abandoned industrial spaces in West Loop into free art studios and youth centers.
The media couldn't get enough of the story. The "Forgotten Sister" who had overthrown Chicago's corrupt elite overnight became the city's most celebrated figure. Everywhere I went, cameras flashed, reporters shouted questions, and the very high-society patrons who had once ignored me at galas were now begging for invitations to my exhibitions.
But in the shadows of the city, danger still lingered.
It was a cold Tuesday evening in late November. I was working late in my new private office at the Cassel Center, reviewing floor plans for the opening exhibit. Mason had been called away to a meeting with city officials in South Loop, leaving two of his best security officers outside my door.
At 9:00 PM, the lights in the building suddenly flickered and died, plunging the vast office into pitch blackness.
I froze, setting my pencil down. "Hello?"
Silence.
Then, the heavy oak door of my office creaked open.
A figure stepped inside, illuminated only by the faint silver moonlight coming through the tall windows. In his hand was a heavy iron crowbar.
It was Julian Sterling.
He looked unhinged—his clothes dirty, his face covered in bruises from his time in hiding, his eyes wide and bloodshot with desperate madness.
"Emily," Julian rasped, his voice shaking with psychotic rage. "Look at you... sitting in your palace while I'm sleeping in my car... while Mason Bennett hunts me like a dog!"
I backed away slowly toward the large glass desk, keeping my eyes on the weapon in his hand. "Julian. You need to put that down. Mason's men are outside."
"Your guards are unconscious in the hallway," Julian spat, taking a heavy step toward me. "I used the service elevator. Victoria told me where you were. She told me you stole everything from us!"
My heart hammered against my ribs, but I forced my voice to stay cold. "Victoria lied to you, just like she lied to everyone else. You ruined yourself, Julian."
"If I'm going down, I'm taking Bennett's precious little prize with me!" Julian screamed, raising the crowbar and lunging across the desk toward me.
I dodged to the left, grabbing a heavy brass sculpture off the table and hurling it at his chest. It struck him hard, making him stumble back with a grunt.
I bolted for the door, but he caught my arm, his rough fingers digging into my skin as he slammed me back against the wall. The cold metal of the crowbar pressed against my throat.
"You think you're powerful now, don't you?" Julian sneered, his hot, foul breath in my face. "You're nothing without Bennett!"
BANG.
The heavy double doors of the office exploded inward, wooden splinters flying through the air.
A tall figure charged into the dark room like a hurricane of pure, unstoppable rage.
Before Julian could even react, Mason was upon him. He grabbed Julian by the collar and thrown him across the room like a ragdoll. Julian struck the heavy oak desk, gasping as the air exploded from his lungs, dropping the iron bar.
Mason didn't stop. He dragged Julian up by his throat, slamming him against the glass window overlooking the street fifty feet below. The reinforced glass cracked under the force of the impact.
"Mason! No!" I screamed, rushing forward and grabbing his arm. "Don't kill him! Don't ruin your life for him!"
Mason stood motionless, his fingers tightened like steel bands around Julian's throat. His eyes were completely black with a terrifying, primal fury I had never seen before. Julian was clawing at Mason's hands, his face turning purple, suffocating.
"Mason, please!" I sobbed, pulling at his suit jacket. "Look at me! Look at me, Mason!"
Slowly, Mason turned his head. His dark gray eyes met mine, the lethal rage flickering as he saw the tears on my face and the faint red bruise on my throat.
He let out a ragged breath, opened his hand, and let Julian drop unconscious onto the floor.
Mason turned instantly, pulling me into his arms, crushing me against his chest with such intensity I could barely breathe. His whole body was shaking.
"I was two minutes away," Mason whispered, his voice cracking with rare, terrifying emotion as he buried his face in my hair. "If I had been two minutes later..."
May you like
"I'm okay," I wept, wrapping my arms tightly around his neck. "I'm okay, Mason. You came for me."
"I will always come for you," he swore into the darkness, his grip on me absolute. "Always."
