Chapter 5 - The Collision of WorldsWe stopped at table three, right near the edge of the VIP section, where the city’s most influential power brokers sat.

Julian Vance, who had secured a seat at our table as my legal counsel and close friend, stood up gracefully to pull out my chair. "Good evening, Harper. You look breathtaking."
"Thank you, Julian," I said smoothly, taking my seat and lifting Maya up into the velvet booster chair beside me.
"Hi, Mama," Maya announced cheerfully, her clear, ringing voice carrying effortlessly across the dead-silent ballroom. "Look at the pretty lights!"
"I see them, sweetheart," I murmured, smoothing her dress. "Aren't they wonderful?"
Across the ballroom, the distance between us and the dais felt like a canyon filled with shattered glass. Ethan had finally regained movement, though his face had drained of every trace of color. His eyes darted from Maya’s face to mine, the terrible, staggering math clicking together in his brain with the force of a collapsing ceiling.
Two years old.
Born in November.
The exact night he walked out.
He took an involuntary step forward off the dais, his hand gripping the edge of the stage so hard his knuckles turned stark white.
Beside him, Jessica grabbed his forearm, her fingernails digging frantically into his tuxedo sleeve. Her face was mottled with a mixture of sheer panic and public humiliation. "Ethan... who is that? What is she doing here?" she hissed, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to keep it quiet.
Ethan didn't answer her. He couldn't. His gaze was locked onto me with a look of such hollow, agonizing devastation that it almost—almost—satisfied the ghost of the woman he had broken two years ago.
Instead of hiding, instead of running away as they had undoubtedly expected for years, I lifted my champagne flute, met Ethan’s stunned eyes across the crowded room, and gave him a polite, glacial, utterly untouchable toast.
Then I turned my attention entirely to Maya, cutting a small piece of artisanal pastry for her plate with absolute serenity.
Whispers erupted across the ballroom like wildfire.
"Is that... is that Ethan Parker's kid?"
"My god, she looks identical to him..."
"I thought they were childless! That's why he left her for Jessica!"

"Good lord, the scandal... his startup's IPO is next month. If the market finds out he abandoned his own child..."
Jessica heard the whispers. I watched her shoulders tense, her carefully constructed composure crumbling under the collective weight of a hundred staring eyes. She looked around the room, realizing with mounting horror that her glittering victory had just been exposed as the stolen, fraudulent foundation it truly was.
