Chapter 3 - The Empty NestWhen Julian Parker’s private town car pulled up to the circular driveway of the Vance estate in Greenwich late Thursday night, the grand house looked dead.

There were no lights glowing warmly from the second-story windows. The manicured lawns were covered in a thin, frozen layer of frost under a pale, sickly moon. The double oak doors remained closed, devoid of the welcoming atmosphere that used to greet him after a long trip.
Julian paid the driver with a frantic wave of his credit card, grabbed his leather garment bag from the trunk, and marched up the stone steps. He punched in the security code on the brass keypad.
ACCESS DENIED. CONTACT SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR.
He slammed his palm against the metal casing. "Damn it!"
He began pounding furiously on the heavy oak door. "Open up! Martha! Claire! It's me!"
After a long, agonizing minute, the heavy bolt clicked back, and the door swung open.
It wasn't Martha standing in the entryway. It was a stern-looking woman in a charcoal business suit holding a clipboard, flanked by two private security guards in black tactical jackets.
"Mr. Vance, I presume?" the woman asked, her voice entirely devoid of emotion.
"Who the hell are you?" Julian demanded, pushing past them into the marble foyer. "Where is my wife? Where is Martha?"
"Mrs. Sterling-Vance vacated the premises yesterday morning under medical advice," the woman replied smoothly, following him with her eyes. "I am Sarah Lin, senior legal administrator appointed by the Vance Estate Trust. Under the revised property occupancy terms filed with the Westchester County Court, your right of entry to this estate has been formally revoked."
Julian stopped dead in his tracks, staring at the woman as if she were speaking a foreign language.
"Revoked? This is my home! I am the head of this household!"
"You were a guest of the estate, Mr. Vance," Sarah corrected him, lifting her clipboard to show a stamped legal document. "The land, the structure, the art collection, and all furnishings were purchased entirely through the Claire Sterling Trust prior to your marriage. You hold no legal equity or ownership claim to this property whatsoever."
A cold dread settled deep in Julian’s stomach. He dropped his garment bag onto the marble floor.
"Where is Claire?" he demanded, his voice cracking slightly. "I need to speak to my wife."
"Mrs. Sterling-Vance is resting comfortably in a secure, undisclosed location with her newborn son," Sarah said evenly.
Julian froze. His breath hitched in his throat.
"Newborn... son?" he whispered, the words tasting like ash. "She... she wasn't due for another month."
"Stress-induced premature labor, brought on by acute emotional trauma and sudden physical shock," Sarah recited, her voice a clinical weapon. "The child was delivered via emergency Caesarean section three days ago. Both mother and baby are recovering well, despite your absence."
Julian staggered backward, his shoulder blades hitting the mahogany coat rack.
"My son is born," he whispered to himself, the magnitude of his betrayal finally slamming into his consciousness with the force of a freight train. "I missed... I missed the birth..."
"You were in Paris with Miss Brooks," Sarah noted casually, turning a page on her clipboard. "A very public trip, I might add. The photographs have circulated rather widely among your board members and federal investigators."
Before Julian could answer, his phone buzzed violently in his coat pocket.
He pulled it out with shaking fingers. It was an email alert from his corporate HR director, flagged with a flashing red banner:

Julian slid down the mahogany wall until he was sitting on the cold marble floor, his head in his hands, staring at the polished tiles as his entire life dissolved into absolute nothingness.
