Chapter 3 - The Morning AfterThe front-page headlines didn't just burn through Silicon Alley; they detonated across the global financial markets.

TECH BILLIONAIRE LIAM HAYES FACES MULTIMILLION-DOLLAR SCANDAL AS PREGNANT EX-WIFE EMERGES AT PLAZA GALA.
HAYES VISION STOCK PLUMMETS 14% AMID RUMORS OF CORPORATE EMBEZZLEMENT AND DISPUTED IP OWNERSHIP.
Inside the glass-walled executive boardroom on the forty-fifth floor of Hayes Vision Tower, the air felt like a vacuum chamber.
Liam slammed his fist down onto the polished oak table so hard the water pitcher rattled. His face was pale, his eyes ringed with dark circles after a sleepless night spent answering frantic calls from venture capitalists, board members, and PR damage-control specialists.
"Explain to me how a society gala gossip column managed to trigger a fourteen percent drop in our stock price by nine o'clock this morning!" Liam roared, glaring directly at Marcus Vance—his lead legal counsel, who sat stiffly near the end of the table. (No relation to Julian, though the name had made Liam's stomach churn when he first heard it).
Marcus adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, his expression grim as he slid a thick folder across the table.
"It wasn't just the gossip columns, Liam," Marcus said quietly, his voice tight. "The moment Olivia Carter walked into that room pregnant, your personal life became a material risk for our investors. But that’s not the worst of it."
Liam stared at him, his breath catching in his throat. "What are you talking about? What could possibly be worse than the tabloids running pictures of my pregnant ex-wife?"
"An hour before the market opened, an anonymous holding company called Vantage Capital Holdings executed a hostile block purchase of our convertible debt," Marcus said, opening the folder to reveal a series of legal documents. "They now hold sixty-five percent of our corporate liabilities. And they just issued a formal demand for immediate restructuring."
Liam froze. The blood drained entirely from his face.
"Vantage Capital?" Liam stammered, his voice cracking. "That’s impossible. Vantage only backs sovereign wealth funds and tier-one institutional players. They don't touch mid-stage tech startups! Who authorized this?"
"I don't know who owns Vantage," Marcus said grimly. "Their legal representation is handled by a shadow firm out of Delaware. But whoever is behind it didn't just buy our debt—they also acquired the intellectual property rights to the core algorithms you claimed you built single-handedly back in Queens."
Liam’s heart slammed against his ribs like a caged animal.
The core algorithms.
The code that formed the foundation of Hayes Vision. The code Olivia had written while sitting at their old kitchen table, surviving on instant noodles and stale coffee, while Liam slept in the bedroom because he had an 'investor pitch' the next morning. When they divorced, Liam had forced her to sign away all claims to the company's IP under the threat of dragging out litigation until she was financially ruined.
She hadn't fought him on it then. She had taken her settlement and walked away.
"Get me Olivia on the phone," Liam whispered, panic clawing at his throat. "Now."
"Liam, you can't just call her," Marcus warned. "Her legal team has already filed an emergency injunction contesting the validity of the original intellectual property waiver, citing coercion, hidden financial disclosures, and—"
Before Marcus could finish his sentence, the heavy boardroom doors swung open.
Khloe Monroe strode into the room, her face flushed with anger, her designer handbag clutched tightly in her manicured hand. Her glossy, pristine image from the night before was completely shattered; her hair was pulled back into a messy clip, and her eyes were wild with fury.
"Liam! Have you seen what they're saying on Twitter?!" Khloe shrieked, slamming her phone down onto the glass conference table. "People are calling me a home-wrecking gold-digger! My brand deals are pulling out left and right! L’Oréal just emailed my agent canceling our campaign rollout!"
"Khloe, keep your voice down, I'm dealing with a corporate crisis—"
"A corporate crisis?!" Khloe screamed, tears of rage welling in her eyes. "I am getting death threats online because your pathetic ex-wife decided to show up at a party looking like a saint carrying your bastard children! You told me she was insignificant! You told me she was nothing!"
"She was nothing!" Liam shouted back, losing control as years of repressed stress and unearned arrogance finally boiled over. "She was a ghost who typed my emails and kept the apartment clean! How was I supposed to know she was playing the long game?!"
"The long game?"
A new, cool voice echoed from the doorway.
Liam and Khloe both spun around.
Standing in the doorway of the boardroom was not Olivia.
It was Julian Vance.
Julian wore a bespoke charcoal-gray suit that radiated quiet, devastating luxury. He didn't rush. He walked into the boardroom with the slow, terrifying confidence of an apex predator entering an enclosure of trapped prey. Two private security guards stood silently just outside the frosted glass doors, blocking any exit.
Liam’s jaw dropped. He recognized Julian instantly—not from social media, where Julian rarely appeared, but from high-level venture summits where Julian sat in the VIP galleries like a king surveying his lands.
"You..." Liam breathed, stumbling back against the edge of the table. "You're Julian Vance. What the hell are you doing in my building?"
Julian stopped five feet away, his cold blue-gray eyes scanning the room with absolute disdain before locking onto Liam’s terrified face.
"I’m here to inspect my property," Julian said smoothly, sliding his hands into his trouser pockets.
"Your... your property?" Liam choked out. "Hayes Vision belongs to me! I founded this company!"
"You founded a shell," Julian corrected calmly. "Vantage Capital now owns the debt, the patents, the servers, and the lease on this very building. As of nine o'clock this morning, you are no longer the CEO of Hayes Vision. You are an employee of my holding company, pending an internal investigation into corporate fraud and asset misappropriation."
Khloe let out a sharp gasp, her hands flying to her mouth. "Fraud? Liam, what is he talking about?"
Liam looked like a man having a heart attack in slow motion. He stared at Julian, his mind racing desperately through every possible escape route, every legal loophole, every alliance he thought he had secured.
"This is insane," Liam stammered, his voice shaking violently. "You can't just hostile-takeover a multi-million-dollar tech firm over a personal dispute! Who put you up to this? Was it Olivia? Did she pay you to—"
Julian’s expression didn't change, but the temperature in the room dropped ten degrees.
"Never speak her name with that filth in your mouth again," Julian said softly, stepping closer until he towered over Liam. "Olivia Carter spent five years building your reputation while you took all the credit. She carried your ambitions when you had nothing, and you threw her out like garbage when you thought you didn't need her anymore."
May you like
Julian reached into his suit jacket, pulled out a thick legal envelope, and dropped it squarely onto the center of the conference table.
"Sign the voluntary resignation papers, clear your personal belongings out of the office by noon, and don't ever attempt to contact Olivia or her children again," Julian commanded, his voice cold as arctic ice. "Because if you don't, I won't just ruin your company. I'll make sure you spend the next ten years of your life defending yourself against federal fraud charges in a cell so small you won't even be able to look at yourself in a mirror."
