Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Ambush

The headquarters of Vantage Point Consulting occupied the penthouse suite of a gleaming glass-and-steel commercial tower in downtown Denver. Inside the plush executive boardroom, mahogany furniture gleamed under recessed halogen lighting, and floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of the snow-capped Rocky Mountains.
Vanessa Brooks sat at the head of the conference table, filing her acrylic nails with sharp, aggressive strokes. She wore a tailored red designer suit that screamed corporate aggression, her dark hair slicked back into a sharp bob.
The heavy oak door swung open, and two men in dark business suits stepped inside without knocking.
Vanessa dropped her nail file, her face twisting into an indignant scowl. “Excuse me! This is a private corporate suite! Who let you past reception—?”
“Vanessa Brooks?” the lead man asked, flashing a gold metallic badge stamped with the seal of the Colorado State Attorney General’s Office.
Vanessa’s voice caught in her throat. “I... yes? What is the meaning of this?”
“You are being served with a federal search warrant and a corporate asset freeze order,” the investigator stated flatly, tossing a thick stack of legal documents onto the polished table in front of her. “You, along with your business partner Mark Carter, are under formal investigation for wire fraud, identity theft, interstate embezzlement, and corporate money laundering exceeding one point two million dollars.”
The color drained entirely from Vanessa’s face. She stood up so fast her executive chair crashed backward onto the carpet. “Embezzlement? That’s absurd! Vantage Point is a legitimate consulting firm! We have contracts, clients—!”
“You have shell accounts, fake invoices, and wire receipts leading directly from Emily Carter’s personal bank accounts to your private real estate holdings and luxury vehicle leases,” a second voice entered the room calmly.
Sarah Chen walked through the doorway, holding a digital tablet displaying interactive financial flowcharts that mapped out every single dollar stolen over the last four years.
Vanessa stared at Sarah, then at the federal marshals who were already streaming past the reception desk into the administrative offices, snapping tamper-evident seals onto filing cabinets and computer towers. Panic seized her chest like a vise.
“Mark...” Vanessa stammered, her hands trembling as she grabbed her smartphone off the table. “Mark told me his wife was a clueless housewife who didn't even look at her bank statements! He said everything was legal!”
“Mr. Carter is currently rehearsing his deathbed monologue at Denver Memorial Hospital,” Sarah said with a cold, professional smile, stepping closer to the table. “And by the time your afternoon appointment with him rolls around, he’s going to find out that his wife isn't just awake—she’s holding the entire deck of cards.”
Vanessa grabbed her designer handbag, frantically trying to push past the marshals toward the elevators. “I want a lawyer! You can’t do this, I didn't steal anything, Mark orchestrated the whole—!”
“Save it for the federal judge, Ms. Brooks,” the lead investigator said firmly, gently but inescapably guiding her back toward a chair as digital forensic experts began mirroring the office server hard drives.
Across town at the hospital, Mark Carter was checking his watch for the fourth time in ten minutes.
It was 1:15 PM. Emily was twenty minutes late.
Mark frowned, picking up his cell phone to dial her number. It went straight to voicemail. He tried Vanessa’s number—it rang once, twice, and then a recorded automated message chimed: “The subscriber you have dialed is currently unavailable or no longer in service.”

A strange, prickly sensation of unease crawled up the back of Mark’s neck. He pulled himself up on his elbows, staring at the empty hallway outside his door.
“Where are you, Emily?” he muttered to himself, a bead of cold sweat forming on his forehead. “Answer the damn phone.”
