Chapter 7 - The Master of the BoardThe winter solstice arrived with a breathtaking blanket of fresh snow that transformed the Mercer Island estate into a glittering postcard of tranquility.

It was the evening of our annual corporate gala—an event that, unlike the glittering, superficial theater of the Manhattan Royale months ago, was dedicated entirely to celebrating the brilliant engineers, logistic experts, and operational leaders who formed the true backbone of Sterling Global.
There were no flashbulbs popping aggressively in our faces. No staged kisses for the tabloids. No fragile egos posturing for the cameras.
Inside the grand ballroom, draped in soft silver and midnight-blue decor, the atmosphere was warm, electric, and grounded in genuine mutual respect.
I stood near the floor-to-ceiling windows wearing a classic, floor-length midnight-blue velvet gown—a gown that honored my family's legacy without hiding behind inherited armor.
My mother walked up beside me, handing me a glass of sparkling cider as we looked out over the glowing festive lights reflecting off the snow-covered grounds.
"You know," my mother remarked quietly, watching the guests laugh and converse across the room, "you look entirely different than you did a year ago."
I raised my glass slightly, watching the bubbles dance against the crystal. "How so?"
"You aren't holding your breath anymore," she smiled softly.
She was right. For years, I had lived with the constant, exhausting pressure of managing someone else's fragile insecurity, cushioning a man who mistook visibility for strength and volume for power.
Now, the air in my lungs felt clean. The space I occupied was entirely my own.
"A wise man once told me," I said, looking out at the glittering winter night, "that you can never truly lose an empire if you never forgot who built it."
"And who was that?"
"My father," I smiled.

Across the room, William Hayes raised his glass toward me in a silent, respectful toast. I nodded back, feeling the quiet, unshakable strength of a woman who had walked through the fire of betrayal and emerged not as a victim, but as the undisputed master of her own destiny.
The board was mine. The pieces were in place. And the future was just beginning.
