Chapter 2 - The Sound of SilenceAt 12:15 AM, the private elevator chime echoed through the quiet penthouse.

Ding.
The doors slid open, revealing Ethan Walker. He looked flushed, breathless, and radiating the frantic, manic energy of a man who had just conquered the world—or at least consumed enough champagne to believe he had.
He kicked off his custom Italian leather shoes, tossing his tuxedo jacket carelessly onto the designer entryway bench.
"Claire!" Ethan shouted, his voice echoing off the high marble ceilings. "Claire, where are you? Don't you dare hide in the bedroom after the stunt you pulled tonight!"
He strode down the long hallway, his footsteps heavy and aggressive against the hardwood floor. He pushed open the double doors of his private office, expecting to find me weeping into a pillow or packing my bags like a helpless, discarded spouse.
Instead, he found me sitting behind his desk, sipping a glass of aged scotch, bathed in the cool blue glow of his own computer monitor.
Ethan froze. The arrogant smirk on his face faltered, twisting into a look of irritated confusion.
"What are you doing in here?" Ethan demanded, stepping into the room and slamming the door behind him. "And why didn't you answer my calls? Do you have any idea how many reporters cornered me downstairs because you stormed out like a petulant child?"
I didn't blink. I slowly set my crystal glass down on a linen coaster, the crisp click sounding like a falling blade in the quiet room.
"You looked very happy tonight, Ethan," I said, my voice dangerously soft. "The cameras really captured your best angle. Especially when you kissed Vanessa."
Ethan’s expression hardened, but a flicker of defensive panic crossed his eyes before he quickly masked it with aggressive bluster.
"Oh, so that’s what this is about," he scoffed, crossing his arms and leaning against the edge of the bookshelf. "You’re throwing a jealous tantrum over a professional courtesy. Vanessa and I work closely together. The gala was a celebration of our Q4 projections. If you had any head for business, Claire, you’d understand that optics matter in high-end corporate mergers."
"Optics," I repeated, tasting the word as if it were poison. "Yes. The optics of a CEO publicly humiliating his wife of twelve years to signal his dominance to the board."
"I didn't humiliate you, you humiliated yourself by acting like a fragile ghost!" Ethan snapped, losing his temper. "For twelve years, I’ve carried this company on my back. I’ve schmoozed investors, negotiated multi-million-dollar logistics deals, and put the Walker name on every front page in New York. While you sat at home collecting dividends and playing society patron!"
"Carried the company," I murmured, standing up slowly from the leather chair.
I smoothed down my emerald dress, walking around the desk until I stood just three feet away from him. Even in heels, I had to look up slightly, but the sheer coldness in my posture made him instinctively take a half-step back.
"Ethan, let me ask you a very simple question," I said, tilting my head. "Who purchased the building we are standing in right now?"
Ethan frowned, thrown off by the abrupt shift in tone. "My corporate portfolio did. Through the Walker-Stark holding fund."
"Incorrect," I replied instantly. "The deed is registered under the Claire Sterling Legacy Trust, funded entirely by my grandfather’s estate three decades before you even learned how to balance a corporate ledger."
"That's a technicality," Ethan dismissed with a wave of his hand, his irritation flaring again. "I manage the trust. I sign the authorizations."
"You did manage the trust," I corrected quietly.
Ethan stared at me, a cold drop of sweat forming at his temple despite the air conditioning. "What did you say?"
Before I could answer, Ethan’s cell phone—the personal line reserved exclusively for high-priority executive alerts—began to ring with a shrill, piercing alarm.
He pulled it out of his pocket, his eyes darting to the screen.
The color drained from his face in a single, terrifying heartbeat.
Alert: Transaction Declined. Security Hold Active.
Alert: Primary Operating Account Balance: $0.00.
Alert: Executive Override Revoked.
Ethan stared at the screen as if it were a venomous snake. His thumb trembled violently as he tried to swipe open the banking app, only to be met with a stark, unyielding red banner:

"What..." Ethan whispered, his voice cracking as he looked up from the phone, his eyes wide with stark, unadulterated terror. "What did you do?"
