The ballroom was draped in midnight velvet and white orchids, filled with the city's most powerful financiers, international shippers, and influential policymakers. But this time, nobody whispered behind cupped hands. Nobody offered pitying glances.
Standing at the top of the grand staircase beside Roman, I wore a custom crimson silk gown that caught the chandelier light with every step we took. My father’s disgraced surname was a distant memory, buried under the weight of my own reputation, my own empire, and the undeniable respect of a city that now knew better than to ever underestimate me.
Down near the entrance, catching sight of us from the crowd, were a few familiar faces—former society acquaintances who had spent years ignoring my existence. When their eyes met mine, they didn't look away with smug superiority; they lowered their gazes with nervous, respectful compliance.
Roman slipped his arm around my waist, pulling me gently against his side as we descended the steps together.
"Ready?" he whispered, his lips brushing my ear.
