Chapter 6 - Checkmate at DawnThe sun was just beginning to bleed orange over Lake Michigan when Declan’s black SUVs rolled up outside Mercer’s primary shipping warehouse on the docks. This time, we weren't running. We were taking the fight directly to his doorstep.

Declan stepped out of the car first, looking every bit the ruthless king of Chicago, his tailored coat snapping in the cold morning wind. He turned back and offered his hand to me.
I took it, stepping out beside him. I was wearing a black wool coat over my emerald dress—a reminder of where this war had started last night.
"Stay behind me," Declan instructed, though his tone was collaborative rather than dismissive.
"I watch your six," I replied, tapping the small, snub-nosed revolver Donovan had slipped into my coat pocket earlier.
Declan’s eyes flashed with a mixture of shock and profound, burning respect. He nodded once.
The warehouse doors were kicked open by Donovan and two of Declan's top enforcers. Inside, Colin Mercer stood surrounded by half a dozen of his best armed guards, looking smug as if he had been expecting us all night.
"Declan," Colin called out, spreading his arms wide as he stepped forward into the dim light of the warehouse. "I wondered how long it would take you to come crawling out of your mansion. And you even brought Nora along. How domestic."
Declan didn't flinch. He walked forward with terrifying calm, stopping ten feet from Mercer.
"You stepped across the line, Colin," Declan said, his voice echoing off the concrete walls. "You touched what belongs to me, and you ambushed my wife."
"She looked bored, Declan. I was just offering her a little excitement," Colin sneered, his hand twitching toward his holster. "A man who ignores a jewel like that doesn't deserve to keep it."
"You think this is about territory?" Declan tilted his head, a cold, predatory smile touching his lips. "You think you're fighting me for control of the docks?"
Before Colin could answer, the red-painted steel roll-up doors at the back of the warehouse began to screech open. Headlights flooded the interior. A dozen federal agents, flanked by state police and Declan’s private accountants, marched into the building carrying boxes of digital drives and arrest warrants.
Colin’s face drained of color. "What is this?"
"Federal indictments for money laundering, racketeering, and illegal arms trafficking," I stepped forward, my voice ringing clear and steady across the cavernous room. "Signed off by three federal judges who received every single financial ledger of yours by email precisely four minutes ago. Your accounts are frozen, Colin. Your shipping routes are seized. You're finished."
Colin stared at me, sheer horror dawning in his eyes as he realized he hadn't just gone to war with Declan Hayes; he had been outmaneuvered by the woman he thought was just a helpless bystander.

"Take him away," Declan ordered quietly.
Within seconds, Mercer’s guards dropped their weapons as federal agents swarmed them, clicking handcuffs into place. Colin was dragged away, spitting curses into the cold Chicago morning air, his empire crumbling around him before the sun had even fully risen.
