Chapter 7 - The Heart of the EmpireSix months later, the spring thaw transformed the Lake Geneva estate into a paradise of blooming cherry blossoms and emerald lawns.

Inside the grand library, the sunlight streamed through the tall arched windows, casting warm golden patterns across the Persian rugs. I sat curled up in the window seat, reading a leather-bound volume of poetry, wearing a simple linen dress that caught the gentle breeze drifting in from the open terrace.

Footsteps approached softly across the wooden floor.

A moment later, strong, familiar arms wrapped around me from behind, and the clean, comforting scent of cedarwood and espresso filled my senses.

"You're supposed to be reviewing the Q2 financial projections for the European expansion," Nathan murmured against my ear, a low, rich rumble of amusement in his voice.

"I finished them three hours ago," I smiled, leaning back against his chest and turning my head to press a gentle kiss to his cheek. "Turns out, having a corner office on the fourteenth floor teaches you how to work twice as fast."

Nathan chuckled, resting his chin on my shoulder and looking out over the gardens where Lucas was currently supervising the installation of some new security landscaping.

"You've taken over half my company, completely reorganized my financial oversight, and turned my fortress into a home," Nathan whispered, his arms tightening gently around my waist. "I'm starting to think you're the one running this empire, Maya."

I turned in his embrace, looking up into his dark, steady eyes. The silver at his temples only made him look more distinguished, and the quiet authority he commanded was softened by an endless, bottomless warmth whenever he looked at me.

"Only the important parts," I teased softly.

Nathan’s expression shifted, the playful humor melting away into something infinitely deeper and more vulnerable. He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small velvet box.

My breath caught.

He didn't drop to one knee with dramatic flair. He simply held the box between us, opening it to reveal a ring—not a monstrous diamond meant to signal status to the world, but a delicate platinum band inlaid with a single, brilliant sapphire that caught the sunlight like a drop of summer sky.

"When I heard you in that cafeteria two years ago," Nathan whispered, his voice thick with emotion, "you said you wanted a man who wanted your heart before your body. You said you wanted love to mean something."

He looked down into my eyes, his gaze so honest, so completely stripped of all his walls, that my heart ached with the perfection of it.

"You gave me your heart, Maya," Nathan said softly. "And you taught a man who only knew how to build walls how to finally feel alive. Will you marry me? Will you rule the rest of my life with me?"

Tears of pure joy spilled over my lashes, hot and fast, but I didn't try to hide them. I reached out, my fingers tracing the edge of the sapphire ring before throwing my arms around his neck.

"Yes," I whispered against his lips, my voice ringing clear and strong through the sunlit room. "Yes, Nathan. A thousand times yes."

When his lips met mine, there were no secrets, no shadows, and no fear. It was a kiss born of patience, respect, and a love that had waited quietly in the dark until it was finally ready to conquer the world.

Far across the skyline, the towering skyscrapers of Chicago stood tall against the afternoon sun. But the empire that mattered most—the one built on trust, truth, and an unconditional devotion—was right here, wrapped in strong arms, standing at the very heart of a forever we had both finally found.
