Chapter 4 - The Locked KeycardsPanic, cold and sharp, flooded Julian’s veins. He grabbed the documents, his breath coming in ragged gasps, trying to find a loophole, a legal error, anything that could prove this was a nightmare.

"This is forged!" Julian screamed, slamming the papers down onto the table, his composure completely shattering. "This is a hostile takeover! You can't just seize a publicly traded corporation overnight! I’ll sue! I’ll take this to the Supreme Court!"

My father finally turned his head, fixing his cold, piercing gaze directly on Julian.

"You can try, Julian," my father said softly. "But you can't sue a trust that doesn't legally exist on public exchanges. You were never the owner of this empire. You were the caretaker. We allowed you to play CEO because Elena believed in your potential. We gave you the title, the salary, and the illusion of power so you could learn how to manage a business. But the moment you forgot who built the foundation under your feet... the arrangement expired."

Julian’s phone buzzed violently in his breast pocket. He pulled it out with shaking hands. It was an urgent text message from the resort’s head of guest services.

MR. STERLING, EMERGENCY. ALL VIP KEYCARDS HAVE SUDDENLY DEACTIVATED ACROSS THE ENTIRE PROPERTY. THE SMART-ROOM SYSTEMS ARE LOCKED. GUESTS ARE LOCKED OUT OF THEIR SUITES, AND THE PENTHOUSE ELEVATOR ACCESS HAS BEEN REVOKED.

Julian stared at the screen in utter disbelief. He tapped frantically at his corporate app, trying to access the master digital override code.

ACCESS DENIED. USER CREDENTIALS INVALID.

Before he could speak, his phone rang. He swiped the answer button frantically, holding it to his ear.

"Mr. Sterling!" shouted the frantic voice of the front desk manager. "Sir, you need to get down to the lobby immediately! The local police are here, and... and federal tax auditors! They're freezing all corporate accounts, and they're serving eviction notices for the penthouse suite!"

"Eviction?" Julian hissed, his voice rising to a frantic shriek. "I own that suite! I am the CEO!"

"Not anymore, sir," the manager replied, his voice trembling. "The new managing director just took over the front desk ten minutes ago. She... she’s locking everything down."

Julian dropped his phone. It hit the ebony table with a sharp crack, the screen shattering against the wood.

The boardroom doors swung open once more.

This time, all eyes turned toward the entrance. Walking into the room with unhurried, graceful poise, wearing a tailored navy-blue silk pantsuit and dark designer sunglasses, was me.

My hair was styled in a sleek chignon. The emerald pendant rested securely against my collarbone, catching the morning light pouring through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Gone was the drenched, weeping woman standing in the rain the night before. In her place stood the true heir to the empire.

The silence in the boardroom was absolute. You could hear the faint hum of the air conditioning units through the vents.

Julian stared at me as if I were a ghost risen from the grave. His lips parted, but no sound came out. He looked at my suit, at the diamond earrings, at the absolute cold authority radiating from my posture—a posture he had taken for granted every single day of our marriage.

"E-Elena..." Julian choked out, taking an involuntary step backward. "What... what is the meaning of this? Why are you dressed like—"

"Like the owner of this building, Julian," I said, my voice cutting through the silence like a scalpel. I walked slowly toward the head of the table, stopping just a few feet away from him.

Julian’s face flushed a deep, mottled red, a mixture of profound humiliation and boiling rage bubbling up inside him. He turned his desperate gaze toward my father, then back to me.

"You played me," Julian whispered, his voice shaking with venom. "You let me run this company for years... you let me invest my life into this resort... and it was all a lie? You set me up!"

"I didn't set you up, Julian," I replied evenly, looking straight into his panicked eyes. "I gave you everything. I gave you a platform, I gave you my designs, I gave you my loyalty, and I gave you my heart. And how did you repay that loyalty? By having your security guards drag me out into the rain like a stray animal while your mistress paraded around in my clothes."

Julian swallowed hard, his arrogance completely evaporated, replaced by the pathetic whimpering of a man realizing he had just destroyed his entire existence over an affair.

"Elena... please," Julian stammered, his voice dropping to a desperate plea. He reached out, trying to grab my hand. "We can talk about this. It was a mistake. Chloe meant nothing to me! It was just a lapse in judgment! We’ve been married for nine years—don't throw all of that away over a misunderstanding!"

I didn't flinch. I didn't pull away in anger; I simply looked down at his outstretched hand with utter, chilling indifference.

"You're right about one thing, Julian," I said quietly, stepping back just out of his reach. "We were married for nine years. And for every single one of those years, I protected you from your own incompetence. But last night, when you had me thrown out of my own lobby... you made your final choice."

May you like

I turned my head toward the two private security guards standing quietly by the doorway.

"Escort Mr. Sterling out of the building," I ordered calmly. "And make sure he doesn't take anything that belongs to the estate."
