Chapter 6 - REBUILDING THE WALLSA house built on love can be rebuilt when love dies—as long as the foundation was poured with your own hands.

Two months later, the May California sun was warm and brilliant over the Atherton estate.
The cream throw blanket had been replaced with a deep navy wool throw. The cracked frame of the wedding picture was long gone, and in its place over the hearth hung a massive, breathtaking oil painting of the Northern Lights over Zurich—a gift Victoria had bought for herself to commemorate her firm’s securing of the European defense contract.
Outside on the terrace, the blue pool sparkled under the clear sky.
Victoria stood by the edge of the water, dressed in a comfortable cream sweater and linen trousers, holding a warm cup of white tea.
Beside her stood Daniel Carter and Ethan Brooks.
“Vance Cybernetics accepted the private buyout offer this morning,” Daniel reported, taking a sip from his water glass. “Aureon Shield now owns eighty-two percent of their intellectual property portfolio for less than fifteen cents on the dollar.”
Victoria smiled faintly, watching a blue jay land on the stone fountain near the eucalyptus trees. “And Marcus Vance?”
“Pled guilty to federal corporate espionage charges an hour ago,” Ethan added. “He’s facing forty-eight months in a minimum-security federal facility. Ryan Bennett took a plea deal—thirty months, with eligibility for parole in eighteen.”
Victoria nodded slowly.
There was no victory dance. No loud celebration. Just the deep, steady relief of a long, dark storm finally passing overhead, leaving the air clear and clean behind it.
“And the Atherton property?” Daniel asked.
Victoria turned and looked back at her home.
The limestone walls reflected the golden afternoon light. The glass windows were clean, clear, and shining. The house no longer felt like a stage where Ryan could perform his illusions. It felt like what it had always been—a fortress built by a woman who had never needed anyone else to validate her strength.
“The property is fine, Daniel,” Victoria said softly. “I had the locks changed. The security system upgraded. And the wine cellar restocked.”

Ethan chuckled quietly. “Did you replace the '82 Pétrus?”
“I bought two bottles,” Victoria said, her eyes twinkling with a quiet, triumphant humor. “And I opened one last night. With the Durand corkscrew.”
