Chapter 2 - THE EVICTION PROTOCOLThe law does not care about your feelings, your vanity, or the stories you tell your mistress. It only cares about whose name is written on the stone.

The front heavy oak doors of the mansion did not open with a knock.

They unlocked electronically from the outside with a heavy, pneumatic thunk.

Two men in dark tailored suits walked into the double-height foyer, followed by four uniformed private security officers wearing the tactical insignia of Vanguard Security Solutions.

The man in front was Daniel Carter—Victoria’s personal asset attorney for twelve years, a man whose face had appeared on the cover of The American Lawyer twice for dismantling fraudulent corporate structures. Behind him walked Ethan Brooks, holding a thick, black leather binder.

“Victoria,” Daniel said, dipping his head in a brief, professional greeting. “The perimeter is secured. The Sheriff’s Department has been notified of an active civil eviction order under Emergency Encroachment Motion 402.”

Ryan stepped around the coffee table, his hands raised in a gesture of frantic protest. “Daniel! What the hell is this? You can’t just walk into my house with armed security!”

Daniel Carter pulled a thin pair of reading glasses from his breast pocket, slipped them on, and looked at Ryan with utter disinterest.

“It isn't your house, Mr. Bennett,” Daniel said flatly. “It has never been your house. Under California Code of Civil Procedure Section 1159, you are currently an unauthorized occupant on private commercial trust property. Your employment with Aureon Shield LLC was formally terminated by unanimous vote of the Board of Directors at 4:00 PM Eastern Standard Time today.”

Ryan stumbled back half a step. “Terminated? You can’t terminate me! I’m Victoria’s husband!”

“You were her husband,” Daniel corrected him, pulling a document from Ethan’s binder and holding it out. “You are now a named defendant in a suit for corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, grand larceny, and breach of fiduciary duty. Here is your copy of the emergency freeze order issued by the San Mateo Superior Court three hours ago.”

Madison let out a sharp, breathless gasp. She grabbed her designer handbag from the sofa, backing away toward the hallway. “I don't have anything to do with this! I was just invited here for dinner!”

Ethan Brooks stepped smoothly into her path, his broad frame completely blocking the corridor leading to the garage.

“Miss Reed,” Ethan said, his voice deep, polite, and unyielding. “You are welcome to leave the premises on foot. However, the white Porsche Cayenne currently parked in the motor court is registered to Aureon Shield corporate fleet assets. The keys must be surrendered immediately.”

Madison turned on Ryan, her face twisted in a mixture of rage and terror. “Your car is a corporate lease?! You told me you bought that for my birthday!”

“Maddie, shut up!” Ryan hissed, his control cracking completely. He swung back toward Victoria, his eyes bloodshot, his hands trembling violently. “Victoria! Is this what you are? A heartless bitch who uses lawyers to humiliate me in front of people? I spent seven years with you! I gave up my career in Chicago to move to California for your company!”

“You were fired from your firm in Chicago for falsifying travel vouchers, Ryan,” Victoria said softly, her voice barely above a whisper, yet holding the room in total silence. “I paid off your forty-thousand-dollar credit card debt before we signed our marriage license. I gave you a title, an office, a credit line, and a life you could never have earned on your own.”

She walked slowly toward him until she was standing less than two feet away.

She could smell the alcohol on his breath. She could smell the cheap, sweet perfume of Madison Reed clinging to his wool jacket.

“And while I was in Zurich negotiating a security contract with the Swiss Federal Banking Authority,” Victoria continued, her eyes searching his face for any remaining trace of the man she had loved ten years ago, “you were bringing a twenty-seven-year-old girl into my home, breaking my father’s wine, and putting my wedding picture on the floor.”

“Victoria...” Ryan’s voice cracked. For a second, the arrogance vanished, replaced by the naked, terrified realization of a parasite that had just been cut off from its host. “Please. We can fix this. I’ll send her away. I’ll go to rehab. I’ll sign whatever you want—”

“The moving trucks are outside, Ryan,” Victoria said.

She turned her back on him and walked toward the floor-to-ceiling glass windows looking out over the moonlit garden.

“You have fifteen minutes to take your personal clothing,” Daniel Carter announced, pulling a silver stopwatch from his pocket and clicking the top button. “Only clothing purchased with your verified personal income account. Any items purchased via Aureon Shield accounts or the joint trust will remain on site under court custody.”

“My clothes?” Ryan yelled, his voice cracking into a high, hysterical pitch. “My suits are in that closet! My watches!”

“Your watches,” Ethan Brooks noted, opening his binder to page fourteen, “were purchased using the M-Reed Creative LLC wire transfers currently under federal fraud investigation. If you touch those watch cases, Mr. Bennett, I will have the officers present arrest you for asset tampering on the spot.”

Madison didn't wait for Ryan.

She ripped her heels off, held them in one hand, tossed her car keys onto the floor at Ethan’s feet, and bolted down the side service hallway toward the pedestrian gate, her expensive silk blouse flying behind her like a surrender flag.

Ryan stood alone in the center of the vast, amber-lit living room, surrounded by six men in suits, while his wife stood by the glass, not even bothering to watch him fall.
