Chapter 6 - The Blade and the ThreadThe blast door slowly swung open.

Standing in the doorway, covered in soot, rain, and crimson blood, was Adrian.
His tactical vest was shredded at the shoulder, his shirt soaked with sweat and gunpowder, but his eyes were blazing with the pure, terrifying triumph of a conqueror. Behind him in the hallway, the fallen bodies of Croft’s elite strike team lay scattered across the stone floor.
Behind Adrian, held by his collar and weeping pathetically with a broken jaw, was Julian Croft himself.
Adrian tossed Croft’s heavy body onto the floor of the bunker like a sack of trash.
"He tried to reach the detonator transmitter in the main security office," Adrian said smoothly, his voice dripping with icy contempt. "I broke his fingers before he could touch the button."
"Adrian!" Dr. Sloan yelled over the blaring monitor alarms. "She's in active labor! The contractions are triggering the micro-transponder's pressure sensor! We have less than eight minutes before the biological fuse detonates!"
Adrian’s victorious expression instantly shattered into raw, focused urgency. He kicked Croft unconscious with a single brutal strike, then sprinted to the side of the operating table, grabbing my hand in his.
"Do it!" Adrian ordered the surgical team. "Do the surgery now!"
"Mr. Moretti, you need to step back to the sterile line—" Dr. Chen started.
"I am not leaving her!" Adrian roared, his grip on my hand tightening until it was the only anchor holding me to reality amidst the blinding pain of another contraction. "Start the incision!"
Dr. Sloan quickly administered the local spinal block and IV sedation. Within seconds, the searing pain in my lower body faded into a dull, heavy numbness, though my mind remained hyper-aware of every sound in the room.
A blue surgical curtain was raised across my chest, blocking my view of my stomach. Adrian stood right beside my head, his large hand cupping my cheek, his eyes locked onto mine with an intensity so strong it drowned out the cold terror of the scalpel.
"Look at me, Elena," Adrian commanded softly, his thumb gently smoothing my brow. "Only at me. Focus on my voice."
"I'm scared, Adrian..." I sobbed quietly, the steady beep-beep-beep of the detonation countdown timer on the surgical console ticking down from six minutes.
"Don't be," he whispered, leaning down to press his lips against my temple. "Our daughter is coming. In three minutes, you are going to hold her."
Behind the curtain, Dr. Chen and Dr. Sloan worked with blinding, terrifying precision.
"Incision made," Dr. Chen reported smoothly, his voice steady despite the sweat dripping down his forehead. "Exposing the uterine wall... I see the mass."
"Pressure sensor is at eighty-eight percent!" Dr. Sloan warned. "Four minutes!"
"Vascular clamps in place," Dr. Chen murmured. "I am isolating the uterine artery feeding the device... micro-scalpel."
The room was deathly quiet, save for the hum of the oxygen machine and the rhythmic ticking of the timer.
"I have the transponder housing," Dr. Chen breathed. "Carefully severing the micro-filaments... one... two... three..."
CLICK.
A sharp, mechanical sound echoed behind the curtain.
The harsh yellow warning light on the monitor suddenly flipped to green. The frantic countdown timer stopped dead at two minutes and fourteen seconds.
"Transponder disarmed and extracted!" Dr. Sloan yelled, dropping the small metallic mass into a lead-lined hazmat tray held by a nurse. "Device is secured!"
"Now get the baby!" Adrian demanded, his voice trembling with an emotion I had never heard from him before.
"Delivering the infant now!" Dr. Chen announced.
A second later, a soft, wet, suctioning sound filled the operating room, followed immediately by the most beautiful, miraculous sound in the human language:
A sharp, high-pitched, furious cry.
Waaaaah! Waaaaah!
Tears burst from my eyes in a tidal wave of pure, overwhelming joy. "Is she... is she crying?!"
Dr. Sloan lifted a tiny, squirming, blood-dusted bundle over the blue curtain. She had a thick mop of dark hair, tiny waving fists, and a voice that roared with life.
"Thirty-four weeks, perfectly healthy, four pounds eight ounces," Dr. Sloan grinned through her surgical mask, tears shining in her own eyes. "Meet your daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Moretti."
Adrian stared at the tiny baby girl. The man who had faced armies without flinching, the man whose name made kings and cartels tremble, broke down completely.
A choked sob escaped his throat as he reached out with a trembling, blood-stained hand, gently touching our daughter’s tiny pink cheek with the tip of his finger.

She instantly stopped crying, her tiny hand reaching out to wrap her microscopic fingers around her father's thumb.
"She's perfect," Adrian wept silently, looking down at me with a love so bright, so absolute, it illuminated every corner of my soul. "Elena... she's absolutely perfect."
