Chapter 5 - Fire on the SnowThe quiet peace of the northern woods was shattered at midnight by the sound of tearing metal and the thundering roar of heavy artillery.

The stealth drones had deployed EMP micro-charges over the estate's outer perimeter, frying the primary power grid and plunging the sprawling timber mansion into darkness, save for the red emergency backup lights that flickered to life along the baseboards.

"They breached the north gate!" Marco’s voice roared through the internal comms as gunfire echoed from the distant pine tree line. "Thirty mercenaries, heavy body armor, thermal scopes! They’re pushing hard toward the main house!"

In the master bedroom, Adrian was a blur of tactical efficiency.

He strapped a reinforced kevlar vest over his black shirt, securing two magazines into his belt holsters. But instead of heading for the front lines, he stepped up to the bed, where Dr. Sloan and Dr. Chen were hastily packing portable surgical equipment into sterile cases.

"Dr. Chen!" Adrian commanded. "Get her into the reinforced bunker beneath the wine cellar! Now!"

"Adrian!" I cried out, grabbing his arm as he checked the slide on his pistol. "You can't go out there!"

"They came here to kill you and take our baby, Elena," Adrian said, leaning down to press a hard, lingering kiss onto my forehead. "The only way they get through that bunker door is over my dead body."

"Don't talk like that!" I sobbed, clutching his vest. "Promise me you’ll come back down!"

He looked into my eyes, a dark, beautiful smile touching his lips. "I promised I’d marry you again, sweet girl. I never break a promise to my wife."

He turned on his heel and strode out of the room, drawing his weapon as Marco and four bodyguards fell into formation behind him.

"Move! Move!" Dr. Sloan urged, helping me out of bed.

Supported by Dr. Sloan and Dr. Chen, I stumbled down the rear servant stairs, my hands resting over my heavy, thirty-four-week belly. Every concussive boom of a grenade exploding outside sent a wave of adrenaline surging through my blood, making my child kick frantically against my ribs.

We reached the heavy, air-tight blast door concealed behind the wine cellar rack. Dr. Chen punched in the access code, and the five-ton steel door slid open with a heavy pneumatic hiss.

Inside was a fully equipped, sterile operating theater built into the bedrock beneath the mountain—complete with an independent oxygen generator and surgical lighting powered by an isolated battery bank.

"Lie down on the operating table, Elena," Dr. Sloan ordered, her demeanor instantly switching to pure medical authority. "Your vitals are spiking! Heart rate is one hundred and sixty-five!"

I climbed onto the cold stainless-steel table as Dr. Sloan hooked up the heart monitors. The steady, frantic beep-beep-beep filled the sterile room.

Above us, the floor shook as a heavy explosion tore through the upper levels of the estate. Plaster dust filtered down from the concrete ceiling.

"They're inside the house," Dr. Chen whispered, his hands trembling as he laid out the surgical scalpels and vascular clamps.

Suddenly, the red emergency monitor connected to my ultrasound scanner began to beep rapidly.

A harsh yellow warning light flashed on the screen.

WARNING: BIOMETRIC SENSOR TRIGGERED. PLACENTAL CONTRACTION DETECTED.

Dr. Sloan gasped, staring at the monitor. "Oh god... the stress! The adrenaline spike in her blood has induced early placental contractions! The device is arming itself!"

"How long do we have?!" I screamed through the pain as a sharp, agonizing contraction tore through my lower abdomen.

"The proximity timer has started," Dr. Chen said, his face pale as chalk as he grabbed the anesthesia syringe. "We can't wait for Thursday. We can't wait for the guards. We have to perform the emergency C-section now!"

Outside the sealed steel bunker door, a barrage of automatic gunfire erupted in the hallway, followed by the heavy, thudding sound of bodies hitting the floor.

Then, silence descended.

A cold, agonizing silence.

A heavy mechanical clunk echoed through the steel door as someone outside began manually entering the bypass code into the external keypad.

The heavy steel wheel on the blast door began to turn.
