Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm on Michigan AvenueBy the time the sun dipped below the Chicago skyline, casting long, bruised shadows across the Magnificent Mile, the shockwave of the Le Cygne encounter had already reached the highest echelons of the city's financial district.

Word travels with terrifying speed when billionaires collide. By Monday morning, financial journalists at the Wall Street Journal and local syndicates were picking up whispered rumors that the invincible Luca Moretti—architect of the Moretti Global real estate and hospitality empire—was facing a personal crisis of catastrophic proportions.
Inside the forty-fifth-floor executive suite at Moretti Global headquarters on Wacker Drive, the atmosphere felt less like a corporate office and more like a war room just before an artillery barrage.
Luca sat behind his massive, custom-built teak desk, staring blankly at a dossier spread across the polished wood. The documents inside contained confidential hospital records, birth certificates, and pediatric check-up summaries retrieved with frightening efficiency by Marcus Vance within twelve hours of Saturday's restaurant incident.
Leo Moretti. Maya Moretti.
Born on October twelfth at Mercy Hospital, Chicago.
Father: Unlisted.
Mother: Nia Carter.
Luca traced his thumb over the ink of his children's names, his jaw clenched so tightly a muscle ticked rhythmically in his cheek. He hadn't slept a wink. The whiskey bottle on the sideboard remained untouched, because alcohol offered no escape from the relentless, looping torture of his own memory.
The heavy mahogany door clicked open without permission.
Marcus Vance stepped inside, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses, his expression grave and guarded. Behind him walked Evelyn Shaw, her eyes red-rimmed from crying, her Chanel suit jacket wrinkled as though she had slept in it.
“Luca, we need to talk about damage control right now,” Evelyn demanded, her voice shrill and trembling with suppressed rage. She marched straight to the edge of his desk, slamming her palm down on the polished wood. “The gossip columns are already sniffing around. Page Six called my mother’s estate this morning asking about rumors of illegitimate children and an impending divorce! Do you have any idea what this does to my family's name—to our name?”
Luca didn't look up from the birth certificates. His voice, when it came, was dangerously quiet. “Evelyn. Sit down.”
“I will not sit down!” she shrieked, tears of humiliation spilling over her mascara-lined lashes. “You lied to me! For five years, you made me feel inadequate because we couldn't conceive! You dragged me through fertility clinics in Zurich and Boston, making me feel like a broken machine, while all along your real children were running around Chicago with your ex-wife!”
Luca slowly raised his head. His dark eyes were completely devoid of warmth, flashing with a chilling, predatory focus that made even Marcus Vance take an involuntary half-step backward.
“I didn't know, Evelyn,” Luca said, each word dropping like lead shot into a bucket. “If I had known, do you think I would have spent a single second pretending to build a dynasty with you? You were a convenience, Evelyn. A polished ornament for the boardrooms and charity galas. Let's not pretend there was ever any grand romance between us.”
The brutal honesty hit Evelyn like a physical blow. She staggered backward, clutching her chest, her mouth opening and closing as the full horror of her position dawned on her. She wasn't a cherished wife; she was a placeholder who had outlived her utility.
“You’re a monster, Luca,” she whispered, her voice cracking. “You’ll pay for this. I’ll take half everything you own in the divorce.”
“File whatever papers you want,” Luca replied coldly, dismissing her with a flick of his hand. “Marcus will handle the settlement. Now get out of my office.”
Trembling with rage and humiliation, Evelyn turned on her heel and stormed out of the suite, slamming the heavy doors behind her with a resounding crash.
Marcus cleared his throat nervously, stepping closer to the desk. “Mr. Moretti... with all due respect, Mrs. Shaw is right about one thing. The media fallout could destabilize our upcoming public offering for the European hotel expansion. We need to get ahead of this narrative.”
“To hell with the public offering,” Luca snapped, standing up so abruptly his leather chair rolled backward and hit the glass wall.
He walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring down at the ants moving along the Chicago River far below.
“Mr. Moretti, what are your instructions regarding Ms. Carter and the children?” Marcus asked cautiously, adopting his professional legal tone. “Should I initiate emergency custody proceedings? File a petition to establish paternity through the courts? Under Illinois family law, as the biological father—once established via genetic testing—we can secure visitation rights, or even joint custody, regardless of her cooperation.”
Luca stood frozen, remembering the look of absolute, unadulterated terror and hatred in my eyes at Le Cygne. He remembered the way Maya shrank away from his touch, and how Leo stood protectively in front of me.
If he went to war with me through the family courts, he wouldn't win his children’s hearts. He would cement himself in their minds as the monster who tore their mother’s life apart a second time.
“No custody lawsuits, Marcus,” Luca said quietly, his voice laced with bitter self-loathing.
“Sir? If we don't act aggressively, she might take them out of state. She could disappear again—”
“She won't run,” Luca interrupted, turning around to face his lawyer with eyes burning with a desperate, obsessive resolve. “Nia isn't a coward anymore. She stood across from me in that restaurant and looked at me like I was a piece of garbage on her shoe. She doesn't fear me, Marcus. And that’s what makes her untouchable.”
Luca buttoned his suit jacket, grabbing his car keys from the desk.
“Find out where she lives,” Luca commanded, his voice dropping an octave into pure executive steel. “Find every detail of her life for the past five years—where she worked, who helped her, how she raised my children without a single dime of my money. I want to know everything.”

“And where are you going, Mr. Moretti?” Marcus asked as Luca strode toward the private elevator.
“To see my wife,” Luca muttered darkly, the doors sliding shut before Marcus could reply.
