Chapter 7 - The Empire We BuiltThe wedding was nothing like the suffocating, meticulously choreographed spectacle Mason had demanded two years prior.

It was held on the sprawling terrace of our new Lake Geneva estate, surrounded only by the people who truly mattered: Arthur Sterling and our closest confidants, international investors who had become steadfast allies, and my father’s old colleagues who had kept the faith through every storm.

I wore a gown of liquid white silk, unconstrained by heavy corsets or family tiaras. The only accessory in my dark hair was my mother’s antique silver comb.

As I walked down the stone aisle—not accompanied by fear or obligation, but by the steady, loving gaze of the man who had held our safety net all along—I looked out over the sparkling water.

There were no cameras capturing a manufactured scandal. There were no treacherous friends hiding in the crowd. There was only the future.

When Adrian and I exchanged our vows beneath the open sky, the words weren't a contract or a corporate maneuver. They were a promise of absolute equality, fierce loyalty, and unending partnership.

At the reception following the ceremony, the guests raised their crystal flutes in a toast that echoed across the stone terrace.

Adrian stood beside me, his arm wrapped securely around my waist, his silver cuff links catching the warm glow of the evening lanterns.

"Penny for your thoughts, Mrs. Cross," he murmured, pressing a gentle kiss to my temple.

I looked up at him, smiling as I watched the moonlight dance across the surface of the lake where it had all begun.

"I was just thinking," I said softly, resting my head against his shoulder, "that betrayal is a funny thing."

Adrian raised an eyebrow, amused. "Is that so?"

"Mmm-hmm," I nodded, a bright, triumphant smile touching my lips. "If Mason hadn't locked that bridal suite door, if he hadn't handed me his mistress's invitation... I never would have known how strong I really was."

I reached up, my fingers brushing against the lapel of his suit jacket.

"And I never would have found the man who was willing to burn the whole world down just to watch me rule it."

Adrian laughed, pulling me flush against his chest as the string quartet began playing a soft, joyous melody, and we stepped out together into the bright, beautiful dawn of our forever.
