The restored brick building in downtown Boston was filled with laughter, classical music, and the bright, vibrant energy of people who had rebuilt their lives from the ground up. Journalists, community leaders, and philanthropists mingled beneath soaring vaulted ceilings and restored skylights.
I stood near the main staircase, wearing a tailored emerald-green silk dress that caught the light with every movement. My hair was styled in soft waves, and my posture was relaxed, confident, and completely at ease.
Ethan walked over, holding a sparkling cider flute, looking sharper and healthier than I had ever seen him. He wore a well-fitted navy suit instead of his old, dust-covered work jacket, and his eyes carried a genuine, hard-earned peace.
"To new foundations," Ethan smiled, raising his glass toward me.
I tapped my glass against his with a bright, genuine smile. "To new foundations, Ethan. We made it."
"You made it," he corrected warmly. "If you hadn't checked those pockets three months ago... God knows how much longer we all would have lived in that nightmare."
"We survived it because we chose not to look away," I replied softly.
Across the room, the double doors opened, and a few late-arriving guests stepped inside. I caught a brief glimpse of my reflection in the polished glass of the entryway mirror.
I didn't see the invisible, neglected housewife who used to scrub kitchen floors while her husband carried on a secret life. I saw a woman of immense strength, intelligence, and grace—a woman who owned her empire, protected her peace, and walked through a storm without losing herself.
