Chapter 3 - The Interloper at the DoorBefore Daniel could find his voice, the hallway outside echoed with the aggressive clatter of designer heels.

The door pushed open with enough force to bang against the rubber stopper. Vanessa stood on the threshold, her white wedding dress damp at the hem, her veil half-torn from her pinned hair. Her face was twisted into an ugly, desperate mask of fury.

“Daniel Kingsley, have you lost your absolute mind?!” Vanessa shrieked, marching into the room before freezing dead in her tracks as her eyes swept across the interior.

She saw the hospital bed. She saw the medical equipment.

And then, her eyes landed on me sitting against the pillows, cradling a newborn infant wrapped in a pink blanket.

Vanessa’s breath hitched. She looked from me to Daniel, her manicured fingers digging into the fabric of her wedding gown. “What... what is this? What is going on? Why are you in a hospital room with her?”

Daniel didn't answer. He couldn't. He looked like a man who had just been shoved off a cliff.

“Vanessa,” I said, my voice cutting through her panic like a scalpel. “How nice of you to drop by. Though traditionally, the bride isn't supposed to visit her husband’s ex-wife in the maternity ward on their wedding day.”

“Shut up!” Vanessa screamed, stepping forward, her face flushing crimson. She pointed a trembling finger at the bassinet. “Is that—is that your child? Did you trap him with some pathetic trick? Daniel, tell me you aren't falling for this! She’s just trying to ruin our day because she couldn't stand losing you!”

“Ask him, Vanessa,” I replied smoothly, tilting my head toward the man who had traded our marriage for her youth and ambition. “Ask him when our last night together in the Portland penthouse was. Ask him what date he signed the final separation papers. Do the math. You’re good with numbers, aren't you? That’s why you kept my calendar for three years.”

Vanessa spun around, her eyes wide with sudden, paralyzing terror, fixing on Daniel’s white face. “Daniel? Tell me she’s lying. Tell me that’s not... tell me that isn't your child.”

Daniel swallowed hard, his throat working convulsively. He looked at Vanessa, then back at me, trapped in the inescapable geometry of his own deceit.

“The dates...” Daniel whispered, his voice trembling so badly it was barely audible. “The dates overlap.”

Vanessa let out a choked shriek of pure rage. She lunged forward, her hands clawing toward Daniel’s chest, shoving him backward against the medical tray with enough force to send stainless steel instruments clattering across the floor.

“You idiot!” she screamed, raining blows against his tuxedo as security guards finally came running down the hallway, shouting for order in the quiet wing of the hospital. “You absolute, lying idiot! You told me she was sterile! You told me you hadn't touched her in a year!”
