Chapter 1 - The Shattered AltarThe double doors of St. Jude Cathedral burst open, letting in a gust of cold winter wind that whipped through the white lilies and ivory tulle lining the aisle. The organ music ground to a jarring, discordant halt.

Vanessa’s manicured hand flew to her throat, her diamonds flashing beneath the dramatic chandeliers as she stared at the empty space beside Daniel at the altar. Ten minutes ago, he had stepped outside to take a private congratulatory call from an overseas business partner. Five minutes ago, he had stopped responding to her whispered texts. Now, he was gone, vanished into the grey Portland morning like a phantom, leaving two hundred elite guests, three photographers, and a scandal-hungry society blogger staring in stunned silence.
“Daniel!” Vanessa hissed, her voice cutting through the hollow church acoustics. She hitched up the heavy, custom-designed silk skirt of her designer gown and sprinted down the aisle, her heels clicking like angry gunshots against the stone floor. “Daniel, what is the meaning of this? The ceremony is about to start! The reception at the waterfront hotel is fully booked!”
She pushed through the heavy oak doors, stepping out onto the wet cathedral steps where the rain was turning into a heavy, blinding downpour.
A black Mercedes idling at the curb stood empty, its driver smoking a cigarette under an umbrella. Daniel was nowhere to be seen. He had taken his own car—or rather, he had stolen the keys from the valet, driven away in absolute, unadulterated panic, abandoning his bride at the altar in front of high society.
Vanessa’s chest heaved. Her carefully applied makeup began to streak beneath the cold rain. Her phone buzzed in her clutch. She pulled it out with trembling, frost-bitten fingers, her screen flashing with a text message from her maid of honor: What is happening?! Everyone is whispering!
She dialed Daniel’s number. It went straight to voicemail.

“Damn you, Daniel,” she whispered to the empty street, her voice thick with venom. “You promised me everything. You swore she was out of our lives forever.”
Inside the cathedral, whispers erupted like wildfire. The elite of Portland—the very people Daniel and Vanessa had spent months manipulating, currying favor with, and inviting to solidify their social standing—began checking their watches, whispering behind gloved hands, and snapping covert photos for local gossip columns. The empire Daniel had meticulously built on stolen shares, corporate gaslighting, and betrayal was starting to crack at the foundation, and the fissure had begun with a single phone call from a hospital room.
