Chapter 6 - The New DawnThree months later, the front page of The Wall Street Journal featured a sprawling, full-color investigative piece detailing the spectacular fall of Ethan Hollis and the sweeping anti-corruption purge at Sterling Global.

The headline read: THE FALL OF A FRAUD: HOW DISGRACED EXECUTIVE ETHAN HOLLIS LOST AN EMPIRE HE NEVER KNEW.
Inside the article, details of his embezzlement, his illicit affair, and his subsequent federal indictment were laid bare for the entire corporate world to digest. He was currently out on heavy bail, awaiting trial, abandoned by his friends, his mistress, and his mother—who had been forced to downroot her lavish lifestyle and move into a rundown suburban retirement home after the family foundation cut off her subsidies.
Meanwhile, Sterling Global was experiencing its most profitable quarter in a decade.
I sat at the head of the massive mahogany conference table on the seventieth floor, leading the quarterly board meeting. The sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, bathing the room in a brilliant, golden morning glow.
"Our acquisition of the European logistics network has exceeded Q3 projections by thirty-four percent," Marcus announced, clicking through the presentation slides on the screen. "And institutional investor confidence is at an all-time high."
The board members nodded in unanimous approval, looking at me not with the casual dismissal of the past, but with deep, abiding respect and awe.
When the meeting adjourned, the directors filed out of the room one by one, offering polite, deferential bows as they passed my seat.
I remained at the table for a moment longer, gathering my leather-bound portfolio and closing my laptop.
Marcus lingered near the door, waiting patiently.
"A car is waiting downstairs whenever you're ready, Madam President," Marcus said quietly. "Your personal estate in the Berkshires has been fully prepared for your weekend retreat."
I stood up, smoothing the cuffs of my tailored charcoal blazer. "Thank you, Marcus. Send the final legal briefs on the Hollis prosecution to my encrypted tablet by five o'clock."
"Consider it done."
As I stepped out of the private elevator onto the ground floor of the Sterling Tower, the crisp, clean air of a new season greeted me. The autumn leaves were turning amber and gold along the pavement outside, swirling in the cool breeze.
I stepped out onto the marble steps, pausing for a brief second to look up at the towering glass facade of the empire my family had built—and that I had fought tooth and nail to protect and reclaim.
A sleek, black Maybach waited at the curb, the driver holding the rear door open with practiced, respectful precision.
I didn't look back. I didn't think about the burnt sapphire dress on the backyard grill, or the cruel laughter that had echoed off the patio stones months ago. Those were the ashes of a life I had outgrown before it even had a chance to cage me.

I slid into the plush leather interior of the car, feeling the heavy door close with a solid, satisfying thud.
I was Ava Sterling. And my future was brighter than the sun.
